Hi Everyone,

While browsing engine parts recently, I noticed that there are two timing chain options for the Disco 4.0 and 4.6 V8 (I'm assuming for other Rover V8's too):

ERC7929 - "Floppy" Timing Chain
ERC7929G - "Stiff" Timing Chain

It looks like the difference is just that - the floppy chain has looser links, while the stiff one has tighter clearances in the links.

Here is a vendor page with both options:

Why two different chains for the same application?

Is one better than the other?

I have never seen this before. All I can tell you is that the "floppy" one has the part # with the "G" at the end so I think that stands for Genuine Part. The other is probably an aftermarket chain.

In all my years with Rovers, I have only seen one chain size offered. Not sure why they are offering a sloppy chain, any mechanic will tell you that a sloppy chain, per wear, will give you less accurate timing, less torque, less MPG and is more prone to breaking.
That being said, how many miles on your engine and why are you looking for a chain?

I asked Trevor about this. Unfortunately I can't remember what he said, or which I ordered. LOL

ERC7929 is the stock replacement, RoverFarms is one of the few place over here that list both. you are going to replace the timing chain set not just chain?

The floppy chain's links bend both ways while the stiff's bend one way. I don't believe there's any difference in link tolerance. The purpose of the stiff is to quiet chain noise.

Nope, not actually planning on replacing the chain - my D2 only has 70K miles on it now.

I was just browsing around and found it interesting that two parts with different properties were listed for the same application. Figured it would be good to know which was preferable so that - when the time comes - I'm informed as to which one is the better choice!
