Default strange grinding noise when starting

96 Disco 1 manual-trans...

my truck usually starts up right away, but once in a while when i turn the key i will just hear a very loud and steady grinding noise. sounds nothing like a car turning over, more like a power saw. seems to happen more often when i've been through mud/water, but not sure about that.

is the starter not fully engaging every time?

You are grinding away the teeth on your fly wheel when it does that, the starter is not engaging all the way, you need a new starter.

So, stop driving your truck till you can make arrangements to get your starter repaire/replaced. If you keep gringing on the fly wheel, yoiu can damage the teeth, then you will need to replace the fly wheel also, Apx. $1000 retail.

Most likely the flywheel is missing some teeth change it before you ruin your starter everytime you get to that damaged spot on the flywheel the starter is not engaging causing it to make that grinding noise.

At $700 plus in labor alone to replace the flywheel, I think the starter, is the first to go especially when it is the bendix gear that will take out the flywheel not the other way away around.

HEY,

JUST HAD THE SAME PROBLEM HAPPEN TO ME, IT'S NOT YOUR STARTER. IT'S YOUR FLYWHEEL. EVERYBODY I TALKED TO SAID IT WAS MY STARTER. IF YOU WANT TO CHECK IT TAKE OFF YOUR STARTER AND ROTATE THE TEETH ON YOUR F-WHEEL. IF ITS CHIPPED AND WORN YOU NEED A NEW ONE. I PAID $60.00 FOR THE WHEEL AT ROVERLAND PARTS ONLINE AND $350.00 TO GET IT REPLACED. HOPE THIS HELPS.

but the only way the flywheel would be damaged would be a non-functioning starter... so wouldn't that still be the root of the problem?

meaning you have to replace both?

Flywheels can't damage them selves. If the bendix goes bad it will start tearing up the flywheel.

MY STARTER WENT BAD TWO YEARS AGO, I REPLACED IT WITH A BOSCH. IT TOOK TWO YEARS FOR THE FLY WHEEL TO SHOW ANY PROBLEMS. MY STARTER IS STILL IN PERFECT CONDITION SO....... DO CHANGE BOTH BUT CHECK THE FLYWHEEL FIRST AND ALSO CHECK YOUR STARTER. GO ONLINE FOR YOUR STARTER MINE BROKE DOWN IN VA. I GOT RIPPED ALONG THE INTERSTATE BUT YOU CAN FIND THEM ON EBAY FOR AROUND $100. HOPE IT WORKS OUT FOR YOU BUT DO SOME EXAMINATION AND YOU WILL BE GOOD TO GO.
