Default Stupid Question

As the title states I know this is a stupid question but I am going to ask anyway and wait to get the verbal abuse.
I am new to the LR world and I have an 02 Disco or should I say my wife has the disco I am just going to do the work on it. I am researching all forums trying to learn as much as possible, I keep seeing people talking about short and long blocks I know this is the engine but how do I know which I have, and are they interchangable if mine ever craps out?[/align]

Default RE: Stupid Question

a long block includes cylinder heads and I believe intake manifold etc. It's the closest thing to a complete running motor as you can get. A short block is typically just the lower half of the motor.

So which one you'll need is really dependent on what kind of problem you have. If your cylinder heads are good to go, or can be rebuilt at a reasonable price, the short block is going to be the better bet, but it will be more work for you or your mechanic as the heads need to go on the block etc.

hope that clarified it for you

unstable,

That clears that up I was actually thinking this meant the length of the engine block.

Thanks

I agree..besides, the terms long block and short block are very misleading..you would think it has something to do with the size of the block. I suppose techincally since a long block does come with a water pump already bolted on it is longer. [sm=smiley17.gif]
