All right the neighbor and I hit a snag. It looks like somebody has definitely been in to the distributor before because the thing just came apart. Got it back together and the problems seem resolved but my neighbor tells me I either need a new timing advance unit or a new disributor all together. Again this is a 95 Disco I w/ 154k, I don't plan to drop any serious coin into her but would like to know some options. I would imagine the distributor to be pretty pricey. Is the timing advance the same thing as the vaccum unit coming off the distributor? Thanks for the help.

The timing advance is the same thing as the vacum advance.
When you accelerate, work the engine, etc engine vacum advances the engine timing.
I would start by setting timing to the corect setting.
And remeber that a new distribitor is cheaper than a new car.
You have about 150,000 miles of life left in your truck.

Good point Spike. The compression test came back good and it just looks like I may need a new distributor in the future (thanks for the link). It runs fine now but I can only guess it will probably need replaced in the not so distant future. I was hoping to crack 200k, do you really think there is a chance to hit 300k?

Sorry to bring up old thread but I need to get the new distributor. Spike the one you showed me was from AB, thanks for doing that. I stumbled on one at Rovers North also. http://www.roversnorth.com/store/p-4...r-v-8-efi.aspx

Any thoughts? Just trying to keep costs down but I didn't know if there was a serious trade off in quality or not. Thanks for the help

You could use the Proline but I think I would buy a used one instead.
