Sunroofs and 5-speeds?
I've decided I'd like to find a Disco I and am starting the research phase. I've been looking at tons of them on ebay, reading online articles, etc.
Couple things I've wondered about and haven't found yet.
I know there were a few 5-speeds sold, the two I've found on ebay currently are a '95 and a '96. Coincidentally both white. One thing I noticed is that neither had the sunroofs.
I'd prefer both a 5-speed and sunroofs, and jump seats.
I assume the jumpseats could be installed from a car being parted, so I'm not too worried about that. (I do assume correctly, right?)
But I'm just wondering if they ever sold a Disco I with both a 5-speed and sunroofs? I'm kinda imagining that the sunroofs were only on upgraded models and the auto trans would be upgraded at the same time.
Thanks guys!

The 5-speeds were only in the US for a couple years right after the Discovery showed up here so they are rare. You may have to settle for what you can find if a 5-speed is that important to you. I like my sunroofs but I agree with antichrist, they can be a PITA. If you don't keep the tracks cleaned and oiled they will quit working and start leaking. I haven't had mine leak yet but I've already had to replace the tracks for my front sunroof and the rear is going to need it in the future. To install the rear jumpseats you'll need to completely replace the trim panels on the rear sides. I would suggest you keep looking around and find exactly what you're wanting. Ebay wouldn't be my first choice where to buy from but some have had good luck.
I am glad to see that it is at least possible to find one with the sunroofs, 5-speed, and jump seats! Now how about heated seats...?
I'm not too scared of doing mods like the jumpseats, and sunroofs don't frighten me either. I owned a VW Corrado for several years, and if you know anything about the Corrado, you know it is a bit finnicky and the sunroofs in them like to break, so I am not afraid of taking care of 'em or fixing 'em.
I also kinda like the 'hunt' of finding the parts to make the car like I want, so if the Disco I find doesn't have jumpseats, no big deal. However, swapping in a manual trans or sunroofs is not something I desire to do. I could do the trans, but I don't want to. I would, however, be interested in finding one of the diesel engines and shipping it over.
I did that conversion on a VW Cabriolet once and it was awesome.
I'm in Manhattan Kansas, so the likes of Ebay and Autotrader are my best bets for finding one in the specs I'd like. There is one for sale at a little local dealer, but it has been wrecked (not bad, but is missing a headlight and the hood is slightly wrinkled) and the engine has a miss. Which wouldn't be terrible, except the guy wants too much for the condition.
On the subject of transmissions, are the autos in these things pretty beefy? In the car experience (mostly VW) I've had, the manuals are always much stronger and more resilient and simpler than the kinda weak autos. Do the Discos with manual trannys get any better mileage? I know I'm not buying it for the mileage, but a little better would be fine with me! On the other hand, I was thinking last night that if I was driving up a boulder, it might be better to have an auto, so I'm not slipping a clutch as much. Of course, if the engine is strong enough, you don't have to slip it is much either... Discuss.

I had a '96 in Epsom Green with a 5-speed, bought it off lease as an LR Certified. Had the dealer add dual sunroofs. It was a nice rig.
There's a '95 SE7 on CL in Portland right now. I can help you get a pre-buy on it if you're interested. No affiliation, other than being interested in seeing more people get the rigs they want...

I just wanted to chime in on this post, partly because I am looking into getting disco II, but mostly because a fellow corrado owner is thinking the same thing....hmmm. Good luck on your search. Also, as a corrado owner you/we have a very good ability to find the parts we want on the net. its not about the find, its about the search!
we also have skills with sunroofs for sure!
1990 nugget yellow G60 here!
Well, Matt, Good luck with your search! I had a nice, red '90 G60 but had to sell it last fall when I bought my house. (Needed to raise a few more funds for the house purchase.)
I started a thread about the toughness of the transmissions elsewhere, and am glad to see that they are pretty stout in either version, so I've decided that it isn't as big a deal to me, unless someone states that manuals get quite a bit better mileage. I'd also like to grab a VW Cabrio, which will be easy to find in a manual.
