Switched to RP 75/140 gear oil and now have a small leak from the T case? is this a situation in which I would add some White Shepherds to the case and see if the seepage stops until i do another fluid change and fix the gasket properly?

 

Can't hurt - but if it is the inspection plate (rectangular) you could also drain, store, service, refill. There is a write up in the tech section on sealing the inspection plate.

 

I was thinking about doing that and just saving the fluid that comes out and pumping it back in. I don't see how it could harm anything given it was already in the darn thing. Also, I see a few WS products, so I am guessing i use the Tranny product?

 

The RP 85w140 actually fixed my weeping tc gasket.

Yes, White Shepherd works well in the t/case, I have had it mine for a little over a year.

 

White Shepard does help expand the seals. But you will want to reseal the large inspection plate. The bolts go all the way through the case. You you need to seal the threads and bolt heads with black RTV, if you really want to stop the leak. Also after you add the White Shepard Leak drive the Rover for 45min minimum (blue & white bottle) Usually $19.99 at Autozone

 

Now aren't you glad you went ahead and spent $50 on gear lube that you may need to drain out and buy again?
If you try reusing the gear lube you are asking for trouble, it will pick up dirt and junk from the drain pan as well as dust and moisture from the air.

 

Just get a new $3 oil pan from Wal-mart. I reused my 85w-140 Royal Purple after it was 9 months old with no issues. I ran it through a paint strainer, just to see if I would catch anthing, it was still in great shape. Exposed to air dust. PLEASE!. It was exposed to air and dust when I opened the cap to pump it in my transfer case. I'm surprised at you on that one Spike

Now if its milky looking when what has gotten to it...time to drain and fill with new. But if its under 1 year old and you want reseal, then go for it.

 

I got a sick deal on it for $9 a bottle, which is the only reason I purchased it, but I would be Jolted If I had paid full price.
