Default T-stat install results

Installed a ScanGaugeII 3 days ago and it was showing 214-220* idling Would quickly (as in 5-10 seconds) drop to 198-200* as soon as I was moving even few mph. Very weird since even my last truck with 4 giant e-fans and a large arftermarket radiator never dropped that fast. I figured something may be up with the temp sensors but I already had a 180* tstat on order since the current one seemed to be original.

Long story short, after replacing the tstat and adding some RedLine Water Wetter I'm now idling at 198-202* and cruising at 196-198*, which seems to be a much healthier range. Not bad getting a 20* drop in coolant temps for $50. Am I right to think that these temps are in what would be considered a normal range now?

I am getting around 188-degrees using the genuine Land Rover warm climate thermostat at cruising speeds.

yes those numbers are good, from research reading other interpretations, it seems 185-190 would be ideal, but most are in the 190's. might keep an eye on the idle temps if ambient temps/summer ever comes back around. and also consider the stupid e. fan doesn't even come on till like 212.
i cruise at 182 and idle 188, but if i idled around 200 I would not be worried.

I have a 180 in mine. I idle usually at 195 or 197 and 186-188 when moving.

Not sure where it ranks but I got the motorad 439-180 thermostat. Does anyone make a recommended electronic fan kit that can be set to come on at 180ish? I installed some on my last truck that had a built in thermostat with a probe that mounted into the rad fins.

if you see your temps go any higher, test the stat, they tend to fail.

I suspect an electric fan will make quite a difference in the efficiency of the cooling system.

I believe the few people who are performing the electric fan mod are buying Ford Crown Vic fans and then using a probe that fits into the upper radiator hose. At least, that's what I've seen around.

One of the things I'm gonna try in the summer is hooking the aux cooling fan to a switch so I can run it when ambient temps get high. I bet it'll help stabilize the temps during the summer, and is less work than converting to a full electric fan mod. But people also report a slight increase in MPG when using an electric fan, so it's probly still a good idea.

I cruise at about 188 and idle in the 190s. I've seen the temp travel as high as 202 when idling for a good 10 to 15 minutes. I too have seen an average drop in temp of about 20 degrees since having switched from OEM factory t-stat to 180 t-stat. Not too mention the complete dismissal of the infamous "tick" sound. Probably still have a slipped liner, but doesn't rear its ugly head when engine temps are sub 205 degrees, as is my current case.
