Takin my 97 Disco Off-Roadin
I own a '97 Discovery SD. I have no mods on it and have the stock wheels. I want to take her off-roading. There are lots of rocky trails, mud pools and steep rock hills. Is it alright to take her or are there things that I NEED to get in order to go. Im not worried about cosmetic upsets, just problems under the hood, and suspension problems. Any input would be appreciated.
Best way to find out: give it a try! A stock Disco will go over pretty rough stuff. Know when to shift into center diff lock (mainly on really slippery stuff and sand). Keep it S-L-O-W on rocks, keep some momentum in sand and mud. Look twice before you leap (how deep is that pond?). Bring a friend with a ******-em-strap to pull you or them back out.
For me the main mod that I wanted to make but never did, was to replace the plastic piece under the door seals with a "rock rail" so you won't ding up the bottoms of the doors on rocks (my new one has it pre-installed). There are a few places where skid plates would be important if you went over a lot of rocks - steering gear, I believe. After that, raising the car changes all sorts of handling dynamics; I've heard it helps (my '98 was getting a little sloppy in the suspension, especially when on the freeway; I believe many of the suspension fixes help here as well).

alright thanks. i took it out for a run and it did pretty good. for some reason my four way flashers went on and wouldnt shut off for a while, i dunno what that was about. other than that it was fine. today i noticed it shaking when i go above 75 on highway, possibly some mud caked in underneath?
Discos are meant to take a lot My 96 D1 isn't really modded just a Rovertym bumper but I wheeled her and she is a beast. The 3 most important mods you can do is get a winch and some skid plates plus Diff protectors.

alright bro i have a 95 disco and i go off roading in the creek by school . no problems although i did get in a three wheel action and it wouldent go but i have stock suspension and no lockers but you should be fine just make sure if ur using the four wheel low that it is allthe way enguaged but if needed i would go with a set of two inch spacer and you can move your back coil to the front and put the pair of spacers in the back and have a two inch lift
