This weekend I found myself on a muddy trail straddling a large log, and the only hope I had of clearing the rear tires was to gun it and hit the log full force. This led to quite a beating before I bailed. (the log was at the base of steep hill, so it was much easier to clear the front axle than the rear)

Seems that a log is a simple obstacle, but I'm wondering if there are any specific techniques people use to cross logs without full brute force/momentum?

 

I would go over it using one tire at a time. I don't know if that is the correct technique but you should be able to crawl over it that way.

 

Good way to cost yourself a large expense at your local mechanic.
First, go around them, why set yourself up for tear out your exhaust, drive shaft, brake line rear diff????????
Besides you might high center and get to leave the truck on the trail, walk home, get a chain saw, come back and cut your self out of a STUPID mess.

 

If possible move it or go around, otherwise one tire at a time and go slow.
I always carry a machet' and a foxhole shovel and of course a recovery strap.

 

i was at an off road park. didn't seem that ripping the log out of the way was "fair". hah.

we had gone quite a ways down the trail before encountering the log, so it seemed worth a try.

the trail was so damn narrow it was hard to hit it at an angle....

just seemed funny that we were running all these trails in a forest, but one downed log kicked our a@@.

 

Thats the way it goes.
We went out in April, 30 min later were were buried up to the axles and I had to hike 5 miles in the rain to get help.

It's always more fun to get them UN-crossed anyways! LOL
