My temperature gauge and fuel gauge are not reading at all. They are both dropped down and stay there. What is common to both of them?

 

I have finished diagnosing my fuel and temperature gauge and it was due to excessive corrosion on the circuit board of the instrument cluster. It would appear that water (condensation) over a period of time wicked past several of the connector pins on the connector to the cluster and down onto a matrix of surface mount resistors and caps on the circuit board. This ended up shorting out one of the power drivers to the gauges.

I purchased a cluster off eBay with lower mileage than my car so that I would be able to sync the BCU mileage value to the new instrument cluster. In order to keep my gauges from my 2002, I just swapped the electronics from the unit I purchased on eBay. This was simple enough as it is only about 16 Phillips head screws. I will now go about finding a shop that can sync it for me. If I can find that, I will just purchase the Nanocom and do it myself.

The good thing here is that it rules out any issue with the ECU as that drives the temp and fuel gauge. I am glad it was a simple enough fix.
