Default Thermostat change, source, part#

I've read about a 180 deg thermostat but not exactly sure. Is the RAVE correct on the thermostat change? Drain the coolant, etc?

Which temp thermostat will be best? 180 because these run hot?

No you do not have to drain the rad, just disconnect the three hoses from the t-stat and replace with the new one, refill and bleed the system (expansion tank taken out and raised, fill with bleed screw out until a constant flow of coolant comes out the bleed screw hole, replace bleed screw, put back tank and top up coolant the next day) you only loose about a gallon or less of coolant.

how hot are you running? how many miles? is you fan clutch working right? is you rad colder at the bottom ( by 10 degrees or more?)

180 is the way to go I just put one in and replaced my rad witch was badly clogged and now I run at 195 at idle and 203 when driving up steep long hills. when i have time i will be posting pics and doing a write up.

I got my t-stat from Atlantic British it is the warm weather one part# is PEL500110 the box says Britpart but it is MotoRad brand, test it in boiling water before instaling

One reason you may want to drain coolant, flush radiator, reverse flush heater core, - that will get rid of some trash in the system, and if there is trash floating around it can gunk up these holes on the top of the new stat.

There are several options, the motorad on amazon.com is a pretty good deal. We have the genuine 180degree one at $60 Product Details - Land Rover Parts | Rovers North

Is there a write up anywhere for system flush or just removing overflow tank, drain and shoot water through?

Yes your system should be flushed or at least rinsed out completely. Do not use tap water cause you are just throwing more calcium back into the system which will plug up your radiator. Consider draining as much of your old coolant from the system, then run 2 or 3 gallons of distilled water thru the coolant bottle and out the lower radiator hose. Then refill with new coolant.

Understood.

So, do I need to mess with the drain plugs on the bottom of the block or will a flush from the overflow bottle out through the lower rad hose be sufficient?
