Default Thermostat problem

I RECENTLY SENT MY 98 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 1 LE TO THE CARIBEAN ISLAND OF HAITI, WHEN DRIVING THE CAR OVER THERE IT SEEMS TO HEAT UP REALLY QUICKLY. THE DISCOVERY IS FULL OF WATER BUT ITS HEATING UP BADLY, I WAS ADVISED BY A MECHANIC IN HAITI THAT IF I WAS TO REMOVE THE THERMOSTAT, THE PROBLEM WOULD GO WAY. AS PER HIS ADVICE I REMOVED THE THERMOSTAT AND THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY. MY QUESTION IS WILL THE REMOVAL OF THE THERMOSTAT HAVE A EFFECT ON THE VEHICLE? WHAT THE PROS AND CONS ARE TO DRIVING A DISCO WITHOUT THERMOSTAT? OR ANYOTHER ADVICE ANYONE MIGHT HAVE....

THANK YOU

Driving without a thermostat will disable the vehicles ability to maintain a constant temperature. This can reduce efficiency, and it is debatable as to whether it would cause long term engine damage. Personally, I would install a new one...

Im no mechanic, but as far as i know, the thermostat should remain open most of the time, its main purpose is to warm up the engine sooner in cold weather.
so it should keep the engine cooler for the most part.

I honestly don't think it will cause any issues in the long run.

You never remove a t/stat, it can actually cause the engine to run hotter cause it will allow too much water thru the radiator too fast and not let it cool down.
Check your fan hub, is it still working properly, how about your electric fans, are they working?

First thing I would do is test the stat to see if it opens and closes at the correct temp? Or just put in a new one and see if the temp runs normal. I wouldn't run it without one permanently but if removing it "cured" the problem then chances are the 'stat went bad so replace it and let us know....

My Tstat has been out for a couple of months now.
I removed it because of over heating issues - the workshop wanted to change the radiator etc etc. Basically just trying to part me with my hard earned.
A friend suggested to remove it - he worked on LR when he served.
Since then the motor takes longer to reach temperature and uses a bit more fuel. But it does run on the exact spot it always ran before my overheating issues.
I should be able to put the new one back in this weekend.

With the t-stat removed your engine will run cold, your temp gauge may say normal but if you were to hook up a scanner that reads live data you would see that you were running cold.
Running cold means you use more gas and foul the spark plugs quicker as well as run the risk of carboning up your exhaust valves.

A thermostat on a DI costs $10 and a DII costs under $20 and takes 20 minutes max to change out. I don't see the point of not replacing it unless you live in a third world country and do not have access to parts.
