Just like the title says, I'm thinking about buying a 2001 Land Rover Discovery II. It has 86,000 miles on it and is in great shape. The radio is broken though and so is the automative movement (don't even know what to call that) for the passengers seat.

If you all could give me any input on what to look for when I make my final inspection before I buy it, and any insight on the best repair route that would be great!

consider paying for a mechanic's inspection

Salvage yard near me gets $30 for a radio and $30 for a seat, U pull. If you get a boneyard radio look for the radio code in documents in the truck, or record the VIN number of the truck. Dealer may not give up the radio code without proof you own the vehicle, but perhaps receipt from junkyard, with VIN noted on it, will help. Most upgrade radio when faced with this. A ripped seat may well have a working set of gizmos in the base.

You'll want to take your own scanner and check for codes, MIL status (engine light should be on, sometimes it is not working); and temperature. The dash heat gauge points at 50% from about 130 - 240F. You would see coolant temp with a scanner, should be under 200F driving, and may bump up to 212 when slow or parked (at which point electric fan comes on). But 221, 227, 235, the gauge will still say normal, when most would believe it is not. When fully warmed up, you should not hear a ticking sound begin.

You can expect to have to replace or rebuild the front drive shaft. Original unit had sealed grease fittings on one end, these dry out from exhaust system heat, then it splits with almost no warning and thrashes a hole in the transmission case.

After 100K budget for new head gaskets and a water pump/fan clutch. You may prolong the wait with a 180F thermostat.

These are great vehicles, not so much in the MPG department, and good to DIY repairs. If you have to take to the dealer your wallet will suffer.

 

How much are they asking for it as is?
If you have never owned a D2 before, I would suggest you take it to a Rover shop and pay for a pre-purchase inspection cause they know what to look for and most likely you don't want to get stuck with a surprise after you pay for it.

Do you plan to do any wheeling in it? Along with the above items you should look to see if it's an early model '01 with the locking center differential "CDL".

Check the top of the transfer case for a nipple.

 

You can buy mine for less than $6,000.
And has NO ISSUES

I love it.
but the bad MPG pisses me off.
I can't pick out a replacement car as those come and go and a buyer is not a dependable thing.

I deal with the bad MPG by driving it AS LITTLE as possible.

I have met more flakes than a box of Kellogg Frosted cereal with Tony the Tiger on the box.
