Default Thinking of purchasing land rover discovery 2

I currently own a 1996 jeep grand cherokee, and i was thinking about switching it up and getting a 2004 land rover discovery of the lot. I have heard how unreliable and expensive land rovers can be, but my jeep has cost me about 5000 to fix over a period of three years. So im not unused to spending money on my car. But i would like some suggestions on should i purchase one or not ?

Everyone who hates a certain brand will tell you bad things about them true or not. Forums aren't a good gauge on reliability as no one comes here to tell others how well their vehicle is. That being said from what I've seen in my own truck and from around is that these are pretty rugged reliable vehicles. As long as you replace the drive shaft and have a way of monitoring engine temps there really isn't anything that can go wrong. For $5k you should be able to find an ok mileage amazing condition 04 D2. Go find the search button there are numerous threads on what to look for and whatnot. It really comes down to your desire to have/use the vehicle and how much work you'll be putting in yourself. Any 10+ year old vehicle will require lots of maintenance and care to keep going so expect to do 85%+ of your own work on it else save your money and get something with a warranty and far far fewer miles.

if you have no problem with spending $5000 over a three year period then a land rover maybe the truck for you. I would plan on spending 1500-2000 the first year getting everything up to snuff and then maintenance and normal replacement from there on.

Have any LR inspected by a LR mechanic prior to buying, not just you local machanic someone who specializes in LR.

It's really not that bad. Especially with the large amount of aftermarket products out there for the vehicles. Know your parts sources! There are quite a few and it's good to find one that's cheap and reliable.

Like any other vehicle you buy, it depends on your luck no matter who the manufacturer is. Good luck and welcome to the LR family.

You have $1000.00 here then add a driveshaft rebuild for starters, if you find one with some of this done your ahead of the game.
