Default Thoughts on a 1999 Disco II for $4000

Hello All,

I am new to this forum but have been lurking for awhile, trying to gather as much information as possible about owning a Rover (Disco II in particular). I've read about the regular maintenance that is required as well as some of the potential problems that need to be addressed (U-Joints, etc.) when buying a used Disco. I am thinking about taking a look at a Disco offered by an Indy shop but wanted feedback from the forum to see if this is a fair price and condition:

Mechanical Report:

This vehicle was purchased from a client. We used as a shop loaner vehicle for a short period until insurance became an issue and we decided to get out of the loaning business again.

"The Bad:

1) Windshield is cracked across the bottom. Not in field of view. We decided to not repair until it became an issue in field of view.

2) Center shaft oring from Transfer case is leaking. Not too bad.. Just keep an eye on fluid level. We just checked it today and topped off.

3) Lower pan or rear main very very slight leak. Nothing of concern. Pretty common.

The Good:

1) Radiator, hoses replaced 10k miles ago.

2) Just performed oil change and service on vehicle today.

3) Brakes in great shape.

4) Entire upper end resealed by us last year off the books. New Headgaskets, Valve Covers, Plugs, Magnecore wires, cylinder heads resurfaced and valve job performed.

5) Besides items listed in the bad, this vehicle is 100% ready to go and nothing else needed.

6) Tires Just rotated. 50% front - 30% Rear

This is a great runner and would make an excellent commuter or offroad rig. "

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Looks pretty good to me. Just make sure if you do buy it you rebuild the front drive shaft with greasable U joints, and a new centering ball kit. Will you be doing much off roading?

Thanks for the feedback. I won't probably do much off-roading, mostly just use it to go snowboarding. I am interested in off-roading but will need to find some spots and a group to get me started in the SF bay area.

Where in the Bay Area are you? I'm in right in San Francisco and there are a lot of Rover owners out here. Have you checked out NCLR? You should come to one of the club's MORG's (Monthly Off Road Gathering) at Hollister Hills SVRA. We meet every 1st Saturday of the month, with the next one this Saturday. The MORG is open to anyone member or not, since it's not an "official" event. It's a great way to meet some members and see what your rig is capable of even in stock form. You can do most of the trails at Hollister in a totally stock Disco. Even if you're running the stock 18" wheels and street tires. I was a trail leader there last month for the club's Annual Meeting. Click on the vid or pic links in my sig. Most of them are taken at Hollister. Welcome to the Rover life!!

Your insurance will replace the windshield after you buy the truck, the other things are of no concern until they become big leaks.
You didnt say how many miles were on it, but it sounds good. I just cant believe you guys had a Rover for a loaner!

I just called the seller and it is already gone. They a few others that I'm going to take a look at though. Disco2Guy, I'm in hayward so hollister is only about an hour or so away, I'll definitely come check it out once I get my rig. Thanks for all the input.

Sounds good. Just so you know, avoid 03's as much as you can, some have an oil pump failure that will cause you to need a new engine. If you find a good 03 that you would consider buying post the VIN and some one will see if it's in range for the failure.

Cool. It's always fun to see a local on here. You should also check out LRRForums.com. It's run by the Cerrone's (Tony and Frank) out of Redwood City. They are THE place to go for your Rover repairs.

edit: Haha, I just saw the OP on LRR. It's for sale by Cerrone's.

I picked one up for 4200 about a year ago. I have been very happy with this purchase. I did have a problem with the 3 amigo's (ouch), but since then it has been a good runner. Had I found my service guy sooner I would have paid half what LR charged to repair.
