Tick-tick-be gone
When I got my DI it had 125,000 mi and a small ammount of valve train clatter, as you see by the sig. I've done the head gasket routine and the heads were gone through by a local machine shop. They only machined .004" off the heads to clean them up. they supposedly cleaned out the rocker arm shaft assys....I'm not so sure because they werent clean enough to me when I got them back...so I "cleaned " them and put them back on. after about 200 mi. the clatter was worse and I have kicked myself eversince for not going farther. After months of putting up with the constant tick, tick, tick....I saved enough to buy new rocker shafts, rockers and push rods. I rebuilt the rocker assys myself and put everything together yesterday.( Crossed my fingers that I didnt need lifters too) and fired her up......no more tick !!! what a feeling ! almost better than sex !
I hope this little bit of info will help some one.........the old parts didn't look all that bad...but we're talking about thousandths of an inch here to make the difference between quiet and not quiet. this was a fairly easy job and the parts were about $300.
next up....the constant drip , drip , drip of the front cover.

rebuilding the rocker shafts ...bench time ~~1 hour
installation 1 to 1.5 hours
parts came from atlantic british rocker shafts 2 @ $59.95
rh rocker arm 8@ $10.95
lh rocker arm 8@ $10.95
push rod 16@$6.95
I reused the springs and washers on the original assys. you will need 4 new cotter pins
my valve cvr gaskets were ok...but having a couple of spares might be handy.
on my DI it was neccessarry to unhook the fuel lines on the rh side to get clearance for the cover to come off, on the left I removed the 6 bolts holding the plenum on and that lifted out of the way( unhook the tps & iac wires) after the aircleaner/ maf sens came off.
I used hylomar gasket sealer to reseal the plenum, and 12 oz of Labatts Blue to celebrate.
I've seen the rocker shafts for about $20 on a few sites on the net ( buick parts)
