AC fan only comes one above engine temp of about 220 or AC on I seem to remember from RAVE - check it.

I think I have restricted air flow not passing thru the 2 rads in the front of the engine bay...and that's causing the main fan not to operate and cool as it should.

I had cleaned the A/C condensor fan a couple months back and there was a bunch of crap lodged in between the fins. Lots of the fins on the lower left quad
were broken too. May be time to put a new one of those in.

If air flow is impeded in one or both this will not allow the spring mechanism in the main fan to do its job and lock up.

[from the RAVE: "When vehicle speed is 50 mph (80 km/h) or less and ambient temperature is 28 °C (82 °F) or more ⇒ Off When vehicle speed increases to 62.5 mph (100 km/h) or ambient temperature decreases to 25 °C (77 °F)"

took the front grill off and upper cover for hose over the cooling system. removed the viscous fan.. cleaned it out thoroughly. mild vinegar solution. the spring is in good condition.

then got to work cleaning the fins on the main engine radiator. no bends or broken bits there. used simple green condensor cleaner solution on it. rinsed with hose several times in
both directions. then cleaned the front A/C condensor. that one is gonna need replacing. it has a lot of fin damage. air flow is getting thru it but from the looks of it, I'm gonna
have to get a replacement.

If anyone has any suggestions as to which one to go with, I'm all ears. I'm assuming you go with replacing the A/C condensor and drier as a pair?

@mackendw As you need to recharge the A/C system anyway it does not hurt to change both.

tested another run yesterday - was around 27 degrees C (~80 deg F) out when I was out. truck up to temp. brought it back home. no ticking at idle.

checked the radiator with an infrared thermometer. was around 141 deg F in center of rad and slightly cooler near the edges (~ 135). so the rad looks
to be working as it should.

continue to monitor...

back in sunny florida. plan to address the ticking:

- installing a 2991 hayden fan clutch and dorman 620-112 fan. waiting on those to arrive
- picked up a new front cover with oil pump set installed. will pack it with vaseline before installation. will be re-using the cam position sensor.

any tips/tricks when doing the front cover are welcomed.

just annoying since you have to drop oil pan too. if leaking oil good time to look at replacing the rear crucifix seals as they will be exposed. oil cooler and trans cooler lines are annoying to get on and off just slow and gentle name of that game

thankfully, I have most of the leaks resolved at this point. I have the 2" terrafirma lift installed so that should help with the pan removal.

Why do you think that will fix the tick? Or did I miss something?

I don't know if it will. But I do know the temperature plays into the situation occuring. hopefully, the fan clutch and fan will kick in when the engine coolant is at 170. the oem fan is not.
judging that from the noise the truck makes when it starts up initially after sitting.

the front cover and oil pump is the second step. The oil pressure is low when the truck is at temp on warm days. My last recording was 12 psi at idle when warm. 42 at 2000 rpm
when hot.
