Mine seems louder in the wheel well areas too. I hear it the most sitting at a drive thru ATM or Dunkin Donuts drive thru where you are right up against a brick wall. Here is mine:

I've only had it a couple months and a couple thousand miles now, so no idea really. Besides the roughness/vibration over 3500RPM, it runs strong, doesn't burn oil and I get 14MPG driving it hard.

Why would piston slap start all at once? Also, I have non-magnetic metal flakes in my oil, could that be from piston slap? I guess I dont have a good grasp on what piston slap is.

What exactly is it? Hydraulic lifter that gets intermittently clogged? Would 10-40 be better than 15-40? It's been very cold this winter in so cal and I'm thinking maybe the 15-40 is too thick. It never did this in the summer.
Laugh Out Loud, 15w to thick for South CA in the winter time? Seriously? 15w-40 will pump in temps down to -15*F.

Keep in mind that our engines require a different type of motor oil than a "modern" engine with overhead cams and variable valve timing.

Stick with the 15w-40 year round and dont worry about the noise.

I said this before and I'll say it again: you bought your truck from a shady dealer. Your engine noise started after you changed your oil the first time, right? They had some snake oil in the engine to mask the engine noise so that you would be fooled into buying it, the engine noise was there before you bought it.
What is Piston Slap

I get the tick part and I can deal with it but, its the non-metalic metal flakes that bothers me. Any thoughts on these?

If you have metal pieces in your oil then it means your engine is falling apart, something is breaking into pieces. This could be old pieces from a previous failure and your engine was repaired but the oil pan was not cleaned out, or it could be a new failure and you are going to experience some or other event if you leave it.

Yeah metal in the oil is never good. We talking 1-2 small flakes or a lot of shavings?
