Yes, I was working on my husbands 1999 Ford F350 with the 7.3 diesel. At 480k he was having to plug in the block heater on these chilly 50 degree mornings otherwise it wouldn't start. Even adter cycling them 3x.
Very helpful advice on the tools. It is best to have them on hand before, if your vehicle is in the middle of a repair you can't drive it to the store...

I guess for me the other main "tools" that I use when wrenching on my car or my bikes are:
1. Rubber / work gloves
2. Really good degreaser (I like the purple stuff personally)
3. A work shirt that doesn't matter if you get it messed up
4. A good flashlight
5. Lots of rags to clean grime away
6. Knowledge of what the task is at hand and the confidence to tear into something with out getting nervous.
