Default Torn or yet another Engine Swap Thread

I love my disco.

I love the smooth solid feel of the 4.6 and the ZF.

I absolutely want to suck start a revolver when i have to fuel it, my road trip mpg is at best what I would expect for in town/wheeling mpg (13-14).

It's getting the motor replaced.

I want 15-16 city, and 20+_ highway.

Don't need a powerhouse,. I'm good with the gutless slug I've been accustomed to with the 4.6.

If I need speed, I'll go drive my 1.4t Dart.

Debated Volvo 6 cyl diesel.
OM61*
Nissan out of a Scout.
GM 6.2 (hate if you must, but equal or better power to what we drive, and they make diesel.)
Ford 6.9 (the deal i am getting there is too good to pass up, the gearing is right, it just makes a lot of sense) I installed the particular 6.9 in the rig I am re-acquiring, I just think it's too big.
4bt
4bd1t (Prefer the Suzie over the Cumstain... but what do you do?)
Buick 3.8
Dodge Slant 6
Chevy 250
AMC 4.0 with a 4.2 crank and pistons (makes a 4.6 heh)
5/7M Toyota Motors, N/A or Turbo
1uz v8

ruling out the 5.3 LS, as I am trying for better than Suburban mpg. My last averraged 15.6, which was fine, but If I am going through the pain of a swap, I want it to REALLY REALLY float my goat.

Have kicked around some 4 cyl options, and 5, but they seem to make no sense, love a b23ft, but... none of my 240's ever really did past 20-22... I can only imagine if I put it in a 5360# rig.

Thoughts?

Emissions exempt county. Already kitty free. 1 click away from being straight piped....

There is a cat on my local FB swap site, that has a Manuel Trannie disco that he claims 16/20 out of.. if I thought that were possible just with a Manuel behind the 4.6, I would do some of the BPU's listed in here, and head down the 5 spd route.

^^^^ Humor - I am guessing.

I love my Disco. We have been back and forth especially after an 8k engine rebuild at 46k. Recently took her on a camping trip - we are better for now.

To offset the Disco mileage/cost/plastic/engines/crazyness I play with these...

Humor? dead serious, actually.

Sadly that H2 (if it has the 6.2 it's a shoe in for this statement, if the 6.0, could go both ways) get's better mileage than our petrol v8 Landy's.

For $1200, I re-acquire my C-350 4 door Bronco. running, driving (Awesome running, which is why I swapped that one in) 6.9 NP435, BW 1356, and Dana 60/70 combo. Has wheels, and tires....

Cummins springs are free for the taking (2014 RAM 2500 rides better than a DII, and a 6.9IDI and a 6.7 weigh within ounces of each other) (we lift a lot of trucks, we throw the stock stuff away), Suburban springs for the ****. ($75)

Build my own links, and then go to a 37" tyre. I built that (the C-350) around a premise, and with that premise in place, it would give the Landy insane gearing, and I go from a 2317 rpm at 70 as I sit (see sig) to a 2371 rpm at 70 according to Grimmjeeper.com.
I am having a hard time foreseeing that iH engine fitting, thought I had a fighting chance, and then I saw the steering box on the landy in my way.

Candidate #2, is the iH Scout. Offset 44's, 3.3 litre 6, and a t-19/Dana 300. All venerable components.

Run a GPS speedo, and then analog gauges, feed post alternator wire to my windscreen and hatch defroggers, and move forward. Steal a Hydroboost set up from a 6.2 for the brakes, and eliminate that Gawddess-Awfully overpriced ABS modulator.

Scaling at 18k, the C-350 yielded 12 on my move here. I re-tweaked the timing, and rectified waht made it run like ****, adn I didn't check the second half, But I wager we hit 13-14, judging by how little the needle moved in comparison to the first leg of the trip.

Plus... after I've done this swap, I have paved the way for a "better" diesel down the road.

.
It's not even close. I bought a H2 new in 2003. Stock I ran a combined 9mpg. My 2 favorite moments being a 10 hour drive across Texas on the 10 with a wicked headwind getting a miserable 5mpg and the one time I was involved in a high speed pursuit of a guy in an F150 who had just side swiped some other car driver into the barrier on northbound I5 in Orange County. I still remember the 911 call where the operator is asking me if i can read the license plate and i'm saying no because they're too far away and i can't catch them up because my truck is already hitting max top speed. Being outrun by a 70's F150 was not my finest hour...

I my modified D2, I still get 15mpg on a run and 10ish in the city.

6.0 vs 6.2

Got to spend 3 hours and 200+ miles behind the wheel of a 6.2 Escalade, avg was 20.9, the 6.0 H2 truck I delivered to him, I struggled to stay above 12.

I've debated the OM617, another hard contender is the d33? the Volvo dizzel.

Kinda kicked around a stroker 4.6 Inline, Jeep 4.0 with 4.2 (258) crank.

I think an oil burner is my best choice for mileage though.

Don't do anything but turbo diesel. If I did another swap, I would look into a Sprinter motor, Either I5 or v6. V6 would be a better fitting package being I had to move the transfer box back a foot to get a intermediate shaft between the trans and transfer box to work. Maybe you could find a 4BT in a junkyard somewhere, but the prices on them are astronomical. I also looked into a 240D, which is pretty much a OM617 with a cylinder chopped off, It would fit way easier, but you would have to fab up a turbo kit by using a OM617 turbo and manifolds.

there is a 1976 300d for sle reasonable like on the local Craigslist for $600.

1976 Mercedes 300D

although this looks interesting...

1983 Mercedes 300D turbo diesel - runs & drives

I am solidly buying the 6.9IDI powered Centurion I built and sold back. The cost of upgrading the Rover axles is steeper than the cost of buying this whole truck and stuffing a Dana 60/70 under it. Just makes sense.

Wishe either one of the Mercs was Manuel..... If only I could find a buyer for my 32's (brand new....) and my existing drivetrain....
