Default Torque converter install, pump tabs

Is there a trick to this? I spent the better part of 20 minutes trying to get the torque converter on but could not get the pump tabs to mesh. I can see them at roughly 2 o'clock and 8 o'clock and I try to clock the converter correctly as I slide it on but I can't get the damn thing to engage. I've tried spinning the T/C but something isn't lining up, I've even tried two T/Cs. Ashcroft recommends standing the trans on its tail (!) and lowering the T/C in but I'd prefer not to go to that extreme. Anyone have a secret to the process?

I’ve played with it on a spare TC on a spare trans that I have. There are 3 distinct “clunks” as the TC engages into the transmission shaft.

Same, never had a problem. I just spin it and apply slight pressure and it drop in the 3 stages.
