Default torque converter not locking till fully warmed up. is this normal?

well its getting a little colder here in TX, last week i noticed the transmission will shift threw all 4 gears, but the torque converter wont lock until the coolant temps hit 180. is this normal for D2 in the winter or when its cold out?

do i have a bad temp sensor?

can a atf filter cause a rattling sound?

because i didnt seem to notice it ever doing it before, the transmission has worked the same and as far as i can tell normal sins i bought it. f and i only notice a small rattle from the car when im coming to a stop from say 30mph and the rattle is more noticeable when im braking. seems to only make the rattle sound ones everything is warmed up too.

i may try and do a new trans filter tomorrow to see if that does anything for me, i did do a trans filter and multiple flushes back in feb when i bought the car.

I'm in Texas, too. How about this freaking weather tonight?!

I have never admitted to anyone, but I ALWAYS watch for the drop when my TC locks. Mine does it from a cold start.

The torque converter can be locked and
unlocked during driving to improve driveability,
fuel consumption and gear changing. The torque
converter will not be locked until the
transmission has calculated that the oil
temperature has reached a predetermined
temperature. This is calculated from the engine
coolant temperature via a software timer within
the TCM, as the transmission itself has no
temperature sensor. The length of this timer
depends on several variables, including the
engine coolant temperature during cranking, but
is approximately:
Engine ambient --- Time taken for
temperature ------ oil to warm up
-13ºF (-25ºC) ---- 12 minutes
32ºF (0ºC) -------- 7 minutes
77ºF (25ºC) ------- 0 minutes
Some D2 specific info from a LR trans manual. I've noticed a delay as you are seeing.

^^^^ here is your answer to the temp/trans issue.

We had temps that were -45 degrees a couple winters ago...and my Chrysler van went about thirty miles before the converter locked in.

Your rattle could be a wide range of things. You need to narrow down the conditions when it happens and location more.

Brian.

I tested mine this morning and it locked immediately. By it is a ridiculous 70 plus degrees this morning. Maybe MINE has the defective temp sensor. Ugh.

Exactly what I was thinking about it being controlled by the Transmission ECU until proper temps are achieved.

well took it out today and it was showing 69 outside and the torque converter locked about a quarter mile away from driving away from my house, so not 100 percent, but just about there. of course the rest of the day it drove normal.

so i guess the (77ºF (25ºC) ------- 0 minutes) statement from the manual is pretty accurate.

It should be a lot colder than 69F today after the cold front.

My thought, too. It was 24 in my driveway this morning and after a very short warmup I went for a drive. No lockup! So my previous posts were wrong.

Have a read of RAVE, section 44 and particularly 44-19. It explains more about autobox lock up which is not necessarily temperature dependent but more rpm and roadspeed. There are various conditions affecting the autobox lock up, those being the ECU, EAT and BCU related to driving style. Also it depends whether in sport mode or not and again ultimate roadspeed. It's a complicated electronic game with the various ecu's involved, almost a 'fuzzy logic' scenario. Really boring reading I appreciate so best done when not inebriated or just plain tired so get the wife to read it first and then quiz her on the finer points.
