Default To tow, or not to tow...

I am contemplating towing one of our cars from PA to CO. My question is, is this going to cause wayyy to much stress on the transmission/driveline? If I do tow a car, should I go with the two wheel dollie thingy, or the flatbed?

Car to be towed by the Discoweighs in at4200 with the trailor (flatbed).

Idea, input?

I towed my Chevy K-1500 with a tow dolly for only 20 miles and it really sucked. Brakes were really hot on just one big down hill part. It seemed the whole time I could lose control at anytime. Never went over 40 mph.I do alot of towing with my Chevy, But this time it needed towed with the Rover.
Good luck if you do it.

Flatbed all the way. That way nothing can go wrong and your disco will just sit up there for the ride.

good luck with the move!

I tow a 3500lb boat alot. One of our trips that we make regularly is about 140 miles one way. I don't have any problems. I run 65 on the interstate and the tranny is never hunting for a gear.

Cameron, I think he wants to use his Disco as the tow vehicle. X-blade, My truck probably weighs about a 1000 lbs more than your boat. Makes a big differance. His car is about 700 lbs heavier than your boat. I think the biggest problem towing with a Disco is the short wheel base. Just my 2ct!!

oh yeah I think you're right, i re-read it...
Well in that case I'm not much help, they only thing I have towed is a uhaul for less than 100 miles. The truck did fine, but like I said I have never done it with a car or anything.

Flat tow...I wouldn't consider anything else. Put the wear on U-haul not your rig. There isn't that big of cost diff. between a tow dolly and a trailer. You and your disco will be a lot happier.

I tow a 7400# Boat with my '04. Plenty of power and braking isn't a problem but it tends to push alot in the corners. The Low range AWD feature of the disco comes in handy for towing.

I also pulled my CJ5 from SLC to Seattle on a u-haul trailer with no problems. Use 3rd gear not Drive. You'll help your tranny a lot.

I just has a friend rent a 2 axle flat bed, he had to lie about what he was going to carry since the trailors are rated at 4000#'s. Anyway towed his D2 from Colorado to Florida with no problems.

Disco's are rated for a max towing weight of 3,500 kgs... so if you're talking about towing a trailer and load massing 4,500lbs then it should be a breeze as it's only a little over half the manufacturers max towing weight. If you're talking about 4,500 kgs, then I'd give it a miss...

Do it and get a flat bed with surge brakes. I one towed my Jaguar (4200 lbs + weight of trailer) for a hundred miles with no problem at all. Just make sure the weight is distributed properly and you may have to lie about the car you are towing since at least U-haul calculates the weight of the vehicle being towed + wright of trailer has to be 200 lbs less than the vehivle towing. I also tow a 7000 lb boat with not much of a problem. Once again, weight distribution and assisted brakes are key.
