I have a question about towing with an 2004 D2. I am confused about the towing capacities and which gear to use. I am thinking about getting a car trailer (open) 18'-20' about 2000lbs emptyto pull my 74 Trans Am about 3500lbs total about 5500lbs. The trailer will have electric brakes on both axles. My question is about what gear selector to use, the tranny selector for high or low or the transfer box for high gear or low gear??? Also, can I even pull the total weight? My towing distances could be from 3 hour drives to 12 hour drives on highway roads only.

The towing capacity of the Discovery is 5500 pounds with trailer brakes. It can tow 7700 in low range but that's not practical for the highway. The key to towing the maximum weight with the Discovery is to have a trailer with brakes and a controller so they work. For the highway, leave your transfer case in high and shift your transmission to third. Overdrive is not designed to handle the weight of a fully loaded trailer.

You need to read your owners manual.
Low range on the transfer case is for low speed high tourqe applications and you can only go about 35 mph max.
And yes, just like AKRover said, transmission in third gear with a heavy load.

Really?! My '97 says 5500lbs with trailer brakes.
You'll be fine at 5500lbs.

 

an '04 should be able to tow as much if not more than earlier DIIs since it has the 4.6L engine.

 

Seems strange that a newer vehicle with more power and better braking system would have a lower towing capacity. Is there a change in the drivetrain that would cause that? A weaker transmission?

 

Again I find this sooooooooooo strange, My disco is rated at 3500 KG's (7700Lbs)as are ALL Uk models, V8 or diesel in High range as well......... These U.S. towing specs confuse the f**k out of me.............

 

They confuse us too.
You guys cannot sue for being stupid though can you? Here in the US if I use the hair dryer while taking a shower and dieI can sue them for not putting a warning label on the hairdrier. Its stupid as hell.
So if some idiot pulls a 7,000 lb trailer and dies his wife can sue LR because he was an idiot.
Some of the laws here are so stupid, I could go into more but not on the forum. I am sure that the UK has stupid laws too.
