I was just at Les Schwab tire center. They no longer sell Toyo tires. And to add insult to injury, they no longer carry 255 55 18's. So, some members have 265's, maybe some running 245's. Is it time to upgrade ? BFG's? Nitto ? Who carries 255's? I have till the summer to figure this out. I know there are several entries about tires, but I can never find the right response.

 

I now run 265/60/18's. Little bigger and fit without no rubbing. I'm in PDX too. I found them used on Facebook marketplace and had a tire shop change out. BFG KO2's are the rave lately.

 

For those who don't know Les Schwab was an Oregon based franchise of tire shops started by a rancher in Prineville, Or. 68 years ago. The store was known for a lower price point and speedy service. The lower price point usually meant lesser known brands like TOYO as well as retreads. TOYO however seemed to be the dominant brand they sold. They had some unusual features like easy credit, a popcorn machine in the waiting room, and an annual "free beef" promotion where you got some frozen meat if you bought a set of tires, which emphasized the down home rancher values of the ownership. Founder Les Schwab did his own TV commercials for decades, wearing a cowboy hat and jeans, usually set on a ranch with sprawling fields in the background. Les died in 2007.

The third generation of kids did not want to be in the tire business apparently and recently sold to an investment banking firm out of San Francisco.

If investment bankers run tire stores like they run everything else things will change and not for the better.

 

Schwab's pricing is laughable and they only seem to offer their house brand tires. You are better off sourcing elsewhere.

BFG, Goodyear, Toyo and Nitto should all have 255/55 or 255/60 options which would work for you.

 

I got Continental Terrain Contact AT tires this summer. Rare find as far as I can tell. Actual 255/55r18 (stock) size. Aggressively truckish but still very quiet and excellent handling. All the reviews and consumer reports speak highly of them, and personally I'm very pleased with them.
I'd recommend if you can find a set.

 

You can go up to 265/60R18 without any mods or problems on stock suspension. I ordered my tires from tirebuyer.com, got shipped to a tire shop.

 

Tom, last week I ended up getting KO2's at America's Tire in Eugene. They're way better than the Michelin's and Riken tires that were on my Disco before. Also, I have the 18's too. I was surprised to find KO2's in my size were even available in 255/55R18, but they were.

i have the BFG KO2s on my Rover with the 2 inch lift.

my stock '04 is running 265/60/18 Pirelli Scorpion Plus ATs.

great tire and considerably less expensive than the BFGs.

i'll be buying the Scorpion ATs again when it's time to replace the BFGs.

 

Toyo's replacement is a 265 70 18. Is that even possible??

 

Punch in your truck on Toyo's website and you'll see they have quite a few 255/55/18 options for you. As others have suggested you could even go slightly oversized which may open your options further.
