Trade-in
hey guys-
Im having no luck selling my 01 disco. Its in great shape and Im now leaning towards a trade-in. Do you know if I would getter better value going to a LR dealership and trading for something else on their lot? or would a regular used car dealership have a better offer? Wondering what your thoughts would be... thanks

Do you have a Carmax in your area? They offer free appraisals and will usually buy your car on the spot. If yes, I suggest going to Carmax and get the appraisal. This is your starting point. Then, when negotiating trade-in with dealers ask for $1-2K higher than the Carmax appraisal to see what you can get. Since you'll know your "worst-case" scenario already from Carmax, you have a negotiating advantage.
Depending upon your state, you're better off trading-in on a purchase instead of selling because you typically pay sales tax only on the net difference.
Good luck!

Coming from a family of former car dealers, you are unlikely to wind up with much of a difference on the value of the LR. The dealer has a relatively narrow range in the amount they will want to make on each vehicle. One may offer you more for your Landy, but they will then just not come down as much on the new vehicle you are buying. Private sales, although tough with a LR (especially with $4/gal gas), should always net you more.

If the OP can't sell it he's asking too much. Anything will sell at the right price. Trading it in at a dealer is entirely different than selling it outright to them. Make no mistake, you'll get just as little in a trade, but they will make the number higher while also increasing the cost of what you are buying. This is standard car dealer operation. Where you trade it makes little difference. You'll be getting what they think it's worth at auction at the absolute highest.
I see that a lot of people have paid $7 or even $10k for these trucks....even recently. That's a shame. Don't expect to sell them anywhere near those kind of numbers.
