Default Trans fluid help!!

Hey folks! I have poured over other post and am not sure I am finding the answer.

the last couple days the out door temp has been about 80* and my trans temp light came on. So I came here and google searched the forum and found most post said low fluid or defective temp sensors.

I have have only owned this about a mont and never have had the light before, so I went and got a few qts and was prepared ( so I thought) too top it off.

I drove it around a bit till the light came back on. I used my laser thermometer and at the highest reading on the pan I got was about 120 to 180. The cats registered about 400.

parked on all fours I crawled underneath after running through the gears for about five seconds and went to remove the fill plug. I was surprised when it gushed out and not stopping. I lost roughly 5 cups of fluid.

I had it running while doing this so I don't know what could be wrong. It drives and shifts fine. Call me confused.

please help.

A small steady stream should come out of the fill plug with engine running according to manual.

it could be a dirty filter, are you seeing any codes?

I would think a bad sensor would produce so code but, I will let others chime in.

if you had too much fluid, that could cause an issue. After all the fluid came out was there any warning lights?

Oh, if it helps, the obd2 said coolant temps were 196.

I didn't let it drain to a stop from the fill hole for fear I was doing something wrong. I am not a greenhorn when it comes to mechanics, but this rover seems alien in some ways to me from being a lifelong Ford guy.

Some D2's can also have a temp sensor installed on the Transfer Case. I believe it's in series with the unit on the transmission though so it could be either unit that is getting hot. I've certainly seen my fair share of burnt up TC's from lack of lubricant. I've only seen one HP22/24 burn up and that was when the case blew apart from a drive shaft failure. With that amount of transmission fluid coming out I'd bet my money on the TC unless the AT fluid was black & burnt smelling from lack of being serviced.

You lost 5 cups because the fluid expands as it gets hotter. The transmission needs to be between 30-50C when you are filling it through the fill plug.

Stien hit the nail on the head you check and fill the transmission cold, but running. Running is important or the fluid will pour out.

Huh, I just misunderstood I guess. I was under the impression it had to be up to normal running temps to check fluid. I will have to try again. I am going to check the transfer case as well as it sounds like the other sensor is on it.
