I have a new to me 2000 D2, do not have the locking diff cable or mechanism attached. I just bought some parts with another transfer case included, it looks to be out of an 04 because it has the cable to engage the the CDL. What I s the a best way to figure which one is in better shape? REPLY

Does your 2000 D2 have the lockable transfer case? Even though it doesn't have the lever, the case itself may still be capable of being locked. Search the forum for illustrations of how to identify the lock nipple.
If it does, just install the handle mechanism and don't worry about swapping the t-case. The procedure for doing so is well documented.

I mean, to answer your question simply, I'd start by figuring out mileage and maintenance on each. In order I'd go...
1. Lowest mileage, well maintained.
2. Higher mileage, well maintained.
3. Lower mileage, not maintained.
4. Higher mileage, not maintained.
Lower mileage though, only to a certain point. I'd take a not-maintained TC that has 50,000 miles over a well-maintained TC that has 120,000 miles.
