Default Transfer case failure

Hey guys,
So without further a due, my transfer case is on it's way out. The diagnosis has now been confirmed and what's happening can be found in my previous thread: https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...e2/#post307451

With that all being said, what are my options? Is there just one part that goes bad? Rebuild? Buy used? Salvage yard?

I've noticed a lot of used D1 and DII transfer cases available online. Are the DI tc's compatible with my DII? Don't care so much for the locking diff, just want to know if it's a direct bolt in without much modification. Any feedback or suggestions would be appreciated.

I believe they are interchangable, as when the t-case went bad in my '04, Justin @ Lucky8 said the cheapest way out was to put in a D1 t-case, as they are a dime a dozen. But I ended up scoring an '04 t-case for $250, so in it went.

I see, I'll try and find an 03 specific one if I have to.... Can anyone confirm a D1 or an 04 tc is a straight swap in an 03?

First, stay away from any t/case that is not an 03 or 04, there are big differences in seals oiling, length and electrical especially the others have a different style shift solenoid and other electrical components.
Let me know if you can't find one, I may have a friend with one.
If you can, get a 04 along with the shift linkage and convert your 03 to a CDL with a lot more traction.

Yours can be rebuilt, usually it is the bearings that go bad from lack of lubrication, i.e. being ran low on gear lube or the gear lube being to old and worn out to provide lubrication.

To rebuild a t/case will run you $700 to $1000 at least, you can buy a good used 03 t/case for $300 plus and just a little more for an 04.

Thanks Mike will do... I'm not an off road enthusiast and the modification that is required to make an CDL work on my truck to me, is not worth it. The worse our truck will see is a snow trip to the mountains once a year. There are 03 tc's as cheap as $150 and the supply is plentiful. Thanks for your help once again!

I cannot figure out why it went bad... I change the diffs and tc oil once a year (total overkill) with Redline Synthetic 75W-90. Maybe 75/85-140 will be more appropriate from now on.

Things happen, even properly maintained parts fail, never eat candy and you can still get cavity's.

Then, yes, I agree no since spending the money on an 04 case. Make sure to start running either a 75 or 85/140 gear oil for extra protection.
