anyone have the right part number? tried a pinion seal I ordered too and does the same thing, makes it impossible;e to move flange by hand so both must be the wrong seals.....

Did you try Atlantic British? Output shaft seal.

well I have the wrong part. found some threads that said car-quest could get the part in and it s the wrong X Number. looks like the transfer case front output shaft seal is part # ftc4939. just verified that at two dealers so it looks like a $35 trip over for the right seal. Atlantic British does not list the part separate but does have the flange kit for the front ( for future reference STC4379 ) . I wish people would list part numbers and finish their threads once they complete the task. way too often they fix the issue after getting everyone's ear and then don't report how they finished it or the outcome. It would be a better site for all of us and there wouldn't be SO Many dead end threads!

let me know if u want a quick "how to" it was pretty straight forward as outlined in the "rave".....getting seal today and will post. I will probably be doing the "transfer case lower cover removal and re-seal".... as well.

Mine was leaking also. The flange had a large grove in it. Change both seals while i was there.

ok so now I'm stumped on why I can not move the flange by hand now? if I tighten the bolt anywhere close to where it came off...... just about a smidgen past last thread.....it's so tight I can not move the flange by hand. I've tried both sides of the seal "facing out":
a) the mostly flat side with the ridge ( would make sense that went to the inside ) and
b) the spring side that is mostly hollow.
Is this normal and will loosen once it gets moving around?

Did something get left in there (piece of old seal?) that the flange is getting forced into when torqued down?

Sounds like you've managed to install and remove the seal a couple of times without damaging it. I'll offer the suggestion to remove the seal and try installing the flange that way to check for binding. If you have binding without the seal installed, then you know it's not the seal.

I wouldn't expect a seal to apply enough friction to make the flange impossible to turn by hand. That's be one heck of a seal if it could.
