Default Transfer case!? If so, cheap D2 in LA

Hey gang,

On my second DII after selling my kitted 2004.

I replaced the CDL transfer case on my old truck before selling it. I bought this 2003 earlier this year, lifter her and did some maintenance. I haven't driven it in about 5 months, put a new battery in fired her right up and heard this.

Is this the TC? If so, I may be putting it up for sale, I'm not ready to do another TC transplant.

I checked the oil, which I changed when I bought the truck, and it's all still in there. No major leaks aside from the British if it ain't leaking clause.

Video below

Let me know what you think. I've found some non-CDL transfer cases locally, but if it is shot, I may sell reasonably, or replace it and sell anyway.

Could be a great truck for someone. I just don't use her anymore.

your truck doesn't appear to be driving anywhere, which raises a big question: wouldn't the t-case only come into play once the autobox was delivering power to it -- that is, when the truck was moving? if the autobox is not in neutral or park, you would have to have the t-case in neutral for there to be anything moving inside it.
so if the autobox was in neutral or park, the noise can't be from the t-case.

Exactly where my confusion comes from with this.

when the t-case in my 04 went it totally exploded and the truck couldn’t move.

for this demo I had the truck in drive and the parking brake on since, in park or neutral I didn’t have any sound.

My bad transfer case didn't make any noise when it wasn't driving. Sounds more like something rattling.

Sounds to me like a rattling cat or exhaust.

Just ordered a stethoscope and hoping to pinpoint the sound tomorrow.

I went back out and here's what's happening:

- When cold, no noise. P/N/D/R
- When warm, no noise P/N.... noise in D/R

This is all under no load just in the driveway.

Car's been sitting for about 4months. Going to pinpoint this issue then either keep her for a trip up to Canada this holiday, or sell her to another home that will get her on the road.

Hope to diagnose asap. But from getting under the truck it sounds like it's the transfer case.

I may drain the TC check the drain plug for metal and remove the inspection plate to give it a better look.

Hoping it is something simple. Not looking forward to another TC swap.

It sounds like something in your exhaust, maybe a broken cat. Smack the exhaust with your fist and see if you get rattles

That's actually a great idea! Before I parked it, I did have some welding done to a crack in my passenger manifold. Maybe some slag got shot out. Fingers crossed. I'll give this a try tomorrow!

This sounds almost exactly like my truck sounded before the muffler inlet pipe separated from the muffler.
