I forgot this thread was still active until the person posted below you. In my humble, rather-inexperienced-but-getting-better-every-day opinion, if you have the solenoid removed and it still won't shift, that points to corrosion in the actual lever on the t-case. You should be able to see the lever where the cable connects from underneath the truck, but it is much easier to reach after removing the center console. I hosed my lever down with PB repeatedly for a couple days and greased it up. It shifts into low and back now without much effort (while rolling ever so slightly in neutral).

I know this is an old thread, but I am going to remove the solenoid from the housing on my t-case and wondered what to do with the wiring. Will it throw a an error/code if I just cut and tape the wires when resealing and assembling the housing or is there something else I need to do?

Keep the wiring, and just get yourself an 03 4Hi/N/4Lo linkage assembly if you don't have CDL on your TC. If you have CDL then try to find an 04 linkage. The 03-04's have the interlock solenoid moved from the TC to the shifter linkage which is MUCH easier to work on or bypass.

Great suggestion, but trying to work with what I have which is a 2000 Disco with an Ashcroft CDL linkage. The stupid solenoid is preventing me from moving into low range and I am comfortable with the risks associated with the solenoid removal. Curious if I can just cut and tape the wires when removing the solenoid.

Just unplug it and zip tie the harness out of the way or leave the vehicle side of the harness on the little black thin metal bracket via the tab. It will be fine left unplugged.

Hello. Currently i have removed the center console and inspection cover. I have found the solenoid. I am have issues getting to the 3 of 4 8mm bolts. Does anyone have any tips on removing this solenoid. Do i need to remove every thing above it.

I only did this a few months ago but I don't remember for sure. I think I did remove it al but it wasn't as big a deal as I thought it might be.

I removed the bracket holding those wiring connectors just to have some space. Removed the four bolts, pulled the solenoid out (it's actually on a cabinet to me left right now), cleaned up the cover, put a very, very thin coat of black rtv on the mating surface and screwed it back down. And I am old and that was a year ago so I may have forgotten some steps. I do recall that the bolts look easy to access, but are a bit of a chore to actually access.

The easiest time to remove the solenoid might be when you pull the hand brake assembly off to replace the transfer case seal that is allowing oil to saturate your parking brake shoes. You have straight forward access to the bolts from underneath at this point. It’s also the time to check your rear u-joint and to replace your Rotoflex…ask me how I know.
