Transfer & Gearbox Failures - Common Driving Errors
Interesting video, does anyone on the forum have an example / experience "self destructing" their transfer case by not locking the CDL?
I never knew that kind of damage could result from spinning one of the wheels...

Probably happens more often with defenders or D1s because they don't have the TC system to keep just 1 wheel from spinning freely when the diff is unlocked, though I'm sure someone driving a D2 with the 3 amigos on would be taking a similar risk. Myself personally, I always lock my cdl if I'm doing anything serious off-road.
The guy answering in the vid is Ashcroft, son of the original owner, and Ashcroft Transmissions specialise in transmissions, transfer boxes and diffs for Landrovers and have done for some decades. They are considered 'experts' in their field of work. I'd reckon the D2 with TC provided it works OK is relatively safe but as you rightly state, a manual Defender, and they are all manual unless modified, would be at risk as they are not TC albeit they run the same transfer box for the comparable year. If you are displaying the 3 Amigos IMO you would be at extreme risk of trashing the centre diff if fitted.
It's worth a call to Ashcroft by you offroader's as it's an expensive and tedious mistake if it all goes 'pear shaped'.
I thought the vid was useful info but the guy asking the questions was a bit of a drongo.

Agree 100% on the TC stopping excessive wheel spin on the D2 - I always lock my CDL before any true "obstacle" where I expect to lose traction.
But seeing as I have both a D1 and a D2 with the 3 amigos, I will definitely be locking my center diff more often on loose terrain / mud...

Ah, another diversity training opportunity - look up the definition of drongo.
One definition of "drongo" is 'a stupid or incompetent person'. Common expression in my UK pals and my vocabulary
