Transmission Debacle

Transmission Debacle
I am need of advice. The other day my wife was driving our 99 LR DII and it started to rev before shifting into 3rd gear. She later told me that earlier when she went to back up she heard a "clunk" sound. I had my friend who works at a transmission shop take a look and needless to say, I was informed that it needed a new transmission ($2000 for used, $3500 for rebuilt) Not sure which direction to go and for right now I have an expensive piece of lawn art. Any advice?

Every Disco clunks, that is normal due to slop in the drive line. The ZF trannies are bullet proof, you don't need another one.
Have you ever replaced the oil in the tranny, transfer case and diffs?
If not then start with that, drain and replace the oil in all of them and also replace the oil filter in the tranny.
Replace the U joints in the front drive shaft, they are known to fail.
Clean the idle control valve and throttle body with carb cleaner.
Do the full 60K service on your truck.
Look in the How Tos at the top of this section for detailed instructions.
