Transmission fail safe
First of all I did search and read the fail safe posts. I have a 2000 D2 and had the battery dis connect for an hour or so putting side posts for the winch on. About twenty minutes later trans is in the 3rd gear flashing lights mode, I read a post that asked about battery issues. Can someone shed some light....thanks

if you battery volts get below 13.5 volt the tranny cpu goes into safe mode only allowing 3rd gear.
the problem 90% of the time is battery, alternator or ground related. Have the battery load tested, charging system checked and clean all your connections.
Im guessing you drained the battery playing with your new winch.
note i said 90% of the time the other 10% are a real PIA to find.

You shouldn't need to recharge a battery after disconnecting it for an hour.
Go to your local parts store and have them do a free charging system test, the voltage has to be between 13.6 and 14.4 volts. If your battery is bad and with adding a winch, if you need a battery now is the time to buy a good 1000 CCA rated battery.

First off Mike, don't type angry. It is very counter productive.
Second, my rover is not my daily driver and the seven total miles in fail safe mode, five and a half of which was getting it home may not have caused permanent damage.
I'm not a rocket scientist but I understand that driving it in fail safe is harmful.
I did get on this forum for help but the hard core attitude is a turn off.
I am also on the paramedic/FF forums but don't hammer people when they ask a pedestrian question.
I also lived in Breckenridge for fifteen years so I have a basic understanding of the whole off road thing.......if you can help me great but I won't be bullied or subjected to angry sarcasm.

did you find the source of your problem? it is not always charging system related in nature.
It took me approx. a month to find out my problem which was a connector under the console.
Mine is an everyday drive and in that month I put over 1200 miles on my truck, with speeds ranging from 30mph to 70mph and my tranny was no worse for the wear.
When i fixed the problem i drained the tranny and the fuild was a good a the day i put it in.
Driving in safe mode is not recomended, but should not be feared.
