Default Transmission Fill Issue?

I changed the transmission fluid today (with Disco Mike recommended flavor) oddly enough, I drained around 5 quarts out and it only took 3.25 quarts to fill. I let it sit in reverse and all the drive selections, even took it out on the road and it ran very well (I changed it because I was getting a shutter when accelerating to highwya speed). I then pullede the fill plug out and sure enough, it was full still. Shutter is gone, drives perfect. Just wondering if the difference in the quantity of fluid that came out is not equal to the quantity of transmission fluid I was able to put back in.

when you pulled the plug again was the engine running... it needs to be running when checking levels.

You fill the tranny twice, the second time with the tranny running in park at which time you may add about another 1.5 quarts.
