Default Transmission Temperature Light on always

2001 Disco 2 has less than 60k miles.

Transmission light on all the time: I changed all the fluids recently, disconnected one sensor at a time, then both sensors. light still there.

people suggested replace sensors. But I not so sure if that is the problem since there is no change. Will appreciate your help. I would like to turn that light off if I can for the Inspection purpose.

Help please.

If the light comes on in the first few seconds the truck is started, the fluid is cold.
So, the sensor is bad,

If the light comes on after a few minutes, then the fluid may be getting too hot as there may not be enough fluid in the transmission.

You need to fill it with the engine running and in "N".

Yes, the light is on when I start the engine and fluid is cold. If the sensor is bad how can I go around it? Disconnect or bridge the connectors? I just want to test and see which one of the sensor is bad.

Thanks

I tend to agree with jfall that you need a new sensor since the light comes on as soon as you start the truck when it's still cold. I know you said that your truck was sitting in storage for a few years so you will for sure want to change out all of the fluids. You should also visually follow and inspect the sensor wire to make sure no rats got up in there and chewed something up while it was sitting.

Is the truck shifting fine when you drive it?
Have you downloaded a copy of the RAVE repair manual yet?

There is only one tranny temp sensor that I see in RAVE and it is in the cooler in front of the radiator, not in the transmission. It is threaded into the bottom of it on the passenger side. Check the connector and wiring to see if it is ok. Here's a thread with more info as well: i think i got screwed by my rover shop - Land Rover Forums : Land Rover and Range Rover Forum There may be one in the transfer case also which would show as a transmission overheat as well.

I recently rebuilt nearly the entire front of the vehicle forward of the block, including cutting the inner fender back to the firewall - towards the end of my journey after I had started putting everything back together and reconnecting the 539806 plugs up front, I discovered that the trans temp sensor could be swapped with (I believe) the passenger horn? Don't quote me on that, but the plug does fit with a nearby plug and when I started it for the first time, that trans temp light stayed on. I wasted a LOT of time on that stupid light and it ended up being plugged into the wrong thing (I eventually thought to compare wire runs of similar length that could be put through similar holes with similar plugs).

I'm not saying that's your issue obviously, BUT it's easy to test as it's a simple switch and thus you can unplug it, check for the light, then jump the two pins and check for the light again, if you get a different result (I forget if it's normally open or normally closed) then it's the sensor. If not, then the sensor wire/loom is damaged or there's a computer error but those would be very unlikely.

Thank you for the link. I have the exact same problem. I will play a round with the connectors to see if it changes.

Thank you all. I need to do some investigation. I am annoyed by this simple issue and i should be able to turn the light off. let me do some tinkering around.
