Typical Engine Temperature?
Hi All
I recently did the head gaskets, I had a little trouble getting the temperature under control. But now I have fitted the inline thermostat from Extinct and it seems to have done the job. I was just wondering what's the normal range of temperatures to expect? I see it hovering from around 204 to 212. Is this decent? It does on occasion spike to 217, but very briefly. Sometimes it goes as low as 197. I feel its good, but would love to hear from others that have done this mod.
All the best Cheers John.

I run an inline setup (180 T-Stat) and my temps are usually 183 as the sweet spot. I will hit 194 with the A/C and in traffic. Temps outside above 100 degrees. In the cold months (Dec/Jan/Feb) I install a 195 T-Stat and will see my temps hit 203 but then stat opens up and they fall into the 190s. Keeps the cabin nice and toasty when its below zero. Perhaps it still has some air in the system? I picked up a new 195 stat a few yrs ago and it wouldn't open up until 212-215. Replaced it. Maybe the old stove top test with the t-stat or try a new 180? I believe those temps are acceptable but it seems many inline owners have lower temps. Those temps seem more like OEM/factory setup.
That's much too high. Start with this: https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...-truck-126823/ Key test: If it idles hot, bad clutch fan. If it is hot on the highway, bad radiator. Both - probably thermostat but it is possible to be both bad clutch fan AND radiator.
I've got just a 180 t Stat no inline mod, and mine around town runs highest 197 in the warm months, on the highway it's 183.2 recently took it on a 6000 mile road trip in August with the AC on the entire trip and the highest I saw was climbing the Colorado rockies at 206 so something seems to not be adding up here in your case
Thanks guys. I'm going to check again that it's fully bled. I did run through extinct instructions, but as said I have done the head gaskets and there maybe some air still in there. I notice that even at highway speeds temperature does not drop below 203. Ad at these speeds viscous fan doesn't play much of a roll, I'm leaning towards the radiator.
I'll check temps across fins again and see what's happening.
Cheers John

Last night when I got in after a 50 mile round trip, as soon as I shut down. I took several temp measurements again. Sensor base on intake, upper and lower hoses, inline t stat housing and several on the heads. Also the other day I took some from the actual block. All of these registered in the 175 to highest 196. I have changed temp sensor just the other day. Purchased from Atlantic British. I was wondering if this is normal to have this much discrepancy between IR gun and ultra gauge readings. I know we spoke about this on my other thread. Is there a buffer safety value here? Do you have similar results? ( Ir difference to ultra gauge)
The only other thing I have fault code is the p1170 for the oxygen sensors. I just bought all 4. I'll fit this weekend. I wouldn't think would be throwing anything off?
Cheers John
My 4.0 V8 is stock (no inline thermostat) and it sits generally at around 192f (Ultragauge reading). This is S Ontario, with ambient temps around 10-15f currently. Cabin warms up quickly.
Am planning to change to inline thermostat and use a 180f thermostat based on the advice from Extinct. (They suggested 195f if winters are v cold and 180f in the Summer with 180 being the best year-round option).
I’d be interested to hear if others living in cold climates would agree with this.

Hi Guys.
I bled the system again which improved the numbers slightly. After thermostat has opened just sitting idling it sticks to 203. Again taking various IR readings across engine and sensor, it is quite a bit cooler. I don't see higher than 185. I even had my buddy a Toyota mechanic check with his IR gun, same lower results than ultra gauge shows. Roughly 20 degrees difference? Before I throw another new temp sensor in I decided to plug the ultra gauge into my Wife's 09 VW. The gauge showed 210 idling, took IR readings engine reads completely normal. Factory VW gauge shows 190. Then I plugged into my ford e450 07 box van. That went as high as 208 then settled down to 201 idling. Then I tried another obd digital gauge (not sure of make) this shows disco idling at 203.
From this point I feel I'm ok. Disco runs cooler than the VW and about 2 degrees warmer than my V10 ford. I'll keep the digital gauge as an early warning, By what I've seen if the ultra gauge hit 220 for instance the engine is just hitting 200?
Thanks
Cheers John.
