Ok so I have a 99 discovery II and I am pretty sure I need to replace my front u-joints. But just to be sure I was wanting to drive my truck with the front driveshaft out. I was wondering if I can do this without messing anything up.

I read another thread that said on an 03 to lock the center diff. Well on a 99 I don't have that. Thanks for the help in advance. If I can't drive it I will just change the u-joints out anyway. I would just feel more comfortable knowing that I tested it.

 

There is no true u-joint test. If you only have one grease fitting on the front shaft, all the u-joints need to be replaced as well as the centering ball.

If you don't have a center differential lock you cannot drive without your front driveshaft. You won't do any harm you just will no go anywhere. I'm not sure if the '99 has a diff lock nipple on center differential, think it does and you can lock it with a wrench, you may want to check.

He has a D2 so he can lock it.

 

Yeah I was not sure about the '99's, I have a DII and cannot lock mine.

 

Ok so I have been looking and know that I can manually lock my diff, but I can't seem to find out how. So if anyone knows how to lock my center diff that doesn't have a lever, please let me know. I have decided to take my shaft to a shop and let them rebuild it for me, but I want to drive the rover while it is out.

 

You will need a wrench, I think it is a 10mm, there is a nut ontop of the t-case drivers side.
Turn that nut.

 

ok thanks, from what I have seen the nut is over the front output shaft correct? and is the actually a nut that will be loosened when I go to shift it back? or is it a 10mm rod?

If your 99 D2 has the factory installed t/case, not one that was replaced under warranty, you can lock your's.
