Default u joints

Are the u joints all the same for an 01 Disco 2? Looking to pick them up while I am having gasket work done.

Your Disco is originally equipped with two types of Ujoints.

The original rears are all standard with grease fittings. The original front Ujoint is also standard with grease fittings. The two comprising the double Cardon (front) do not have grease fittings.

The consensus view is to replace all 5parts with grease-able Ujoints.

I just received mine from Rover Connections. Soon to be installed… There is only one part number associated with the Series II Ujoints.

Search this site for Ujoint or driveline failure and see how many people talk about holes in their transmission due to a simple Ujoint failure.

Do you want to spend $39.00 ea for 5 Ujoints or spend $?,???.?? for 1 new trans. Better to be safe; I'm replacing all of them.

What I mean is, is greasing the others sufficient or do even grease-able ones eventually need repalcing as well?

As long as you have the driveline out, I would replace the greasable one as well (if it has a fair amount of miles on it). They fail too, especially if they don't get greased like they should. I didn't bother with the rear shaft when I did mine, everything was tight.

With 80,000 miles on your truck, and possibily no idea if they have been greased once a year or every 12,000 miles, I would say replace them.
I would also suggest you buy your own grease gun and a tube of the most expensive synthetic grease you can buy, like Mobil 1 grease and do your on greasing to make sure they are done right. Also, there is a slip shaft on each drive shaft that came from the factory greased with a plug installed, remove that plug, install a grease fitting and lube the hell out of it evry other year and then reinstall the plug.
Good luck.

Since Disco is in the local shop getting some gaskets replaced, I took Mike's advice and had them drop the drive shafts and a local driveline shop is doing the u joints and centering ball kit. Atlantic British and Rover Connection have supplied most parts including valley gasket kit, front end gasket, front crankshaft seal, water pump and gasket, head gaskets, magnecor 8 mm's and the list goes on....

The centering ball kit is located between the 2 u-joints inside the double cardon housing that connects the front drive shaft to the t/case.
