Are you getting any other codes? It should be a little warmer than ambient, but not that much (unless this pic was taken on an extremely hot day). The IAT in combination with the MAF tells the engine how much oxygen is in the air and therefore how much fuel to inject. The fuel trim is then adjusted based on the upstream O2 sensor feedback, so it
might not be severe enough to throw a code, but it’s not good!
A sensor that reads too high is going to tell the computer that there is less oxygen in the air than there really is, causing a lean burn.
For quick reference you can check the exterior temp in the HVAC system, they use different sensors.
Drove my 03 D2 today. Was seeing 74’ F intake temp and 70’ F outside. I do have a snorkel.
Also drove my car back to back. It was 78’ F intake temp and also saying 70’ F outside. No snorkel 😊 on the car. It is supercharged 3.0 V6 with twin air intakes just behind the grill. I did notice that with easy traveling and light engine load the intake temp was a bit higher than going up a hill with the engine under a bit more load.
I have watched my D2 air intake temp vs outside for a long time via UltraGauge. Seems to normalize at outside temp + about 7% for intake temp, again with a snorkel. When it gets heat soaked the intake temps come back down pretty quick with steady movement.
So 80deg outside and running down the highway it stays around 125 deg. At idle and I town runs around 145 deg. But get it on open road it drops to 125. The connector from the air box to fender is pretty bad I noticed also.
Reviving an oldie but…. My intake temps here in Portland today (95 degrees outsiitting in stop n go traffic)…. Are 165-170. Uhhhh. Not normal. I replaced my intake tube a while ago with the good Carrs4x4 rubber tube and it’s all sealed up… Can I have a bad sensor? And if so what reads the intake temperature and gives it to OBD2?)
