Default Use for an old tablet

So a few nights ago i found my old 32gb nexus 7 tablet. (you can pick a 1st gen up cheap which is what I'm using) Anyways i though hey they make bluetooth obd2 for android such as torque etc.. i found that the tablet sits perfectly in the gap of the cluster and of the steering wheel without moving around! My speedo is off by alot so a gps based speedo is the best way to go i thought. so i have been searching through apps and found a few. They overlay your speed on all your apps so while your music player is up or nav you can see your speed.

with google maps if you connect to wifi you can save a map of your city or any where and it will basically act as a car based gps that runs off of a dvd. So far i really like it and it leaves enough space to see all the warning lights besides abs and your indicators but you can see the reflection and thats good enough for me. But now you have all of your fun android things right on your dash! I don't plan to play games or anything but as soon as my bluetooth adapter comes in i will have my ultra gauge for half the price.

If you have ever seen the 2014 or maybe its 2015 audi TT information center on the cluster its the same thing basically just a lot more ghetto and a lot cheaper and can do more.

Sadly you can't control it with your steering wheel so you have to reach around from the right or left which hasn't been a bother for me yet or reach through the center. But i do have it connected to the cigarette lighter and the tablet wakes up and opens every necessary app into the background when they key is turned on and it closes every background app and sleeps the tablet when the key is turned off but can manually be turned on still if you want to listen to your music or check nav with the key off.

I will post pictures later on when its finished to the best i can do.

You go to the search bar on google maps (this only works on android as far as i know) you hide your keyboard and scroll to the bottom of the search menu and tap make area available online

Its sorta like that but its behind the steeringwheel on the D2 tomorrow i should have pictures for now heres all the apps i have so far if anyone wants specifics on my settings to make everything work with the key ask on here or pm me (if you want to do this project)

Speedo trip elevation gauges are all done with https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ys.speedometer

I use the android equalizer
For gps i use just google maps offline mode since mines not 3G
For music i use RDIO but you can use whatever.
To make it work with the key i used https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...pps.sleeptweak
(all the apps can be used inside of the Ulysee app)

All of the apps are free so if you have a car charger and a tablet laying around this is a completely free project for anyone with messed up speedos or just want something cool.

You don't have to use the nexus 7 i just happened to have it laying around and it fit perfect I'm sure another tablet would work just as well if its the same size.

When my OBD2 stuff comes in i will just be using the free version of torque.

I'm not OBD so I have to keep the gauges visible aside from the speedo I use the ulysses app as well. Especially in my MGB as the speedo died.

I don't have a 3g/4g tab just wifi but I rooted my phone so it takes care of the mobile web for me. I do have the maps of my area downloaded though.

When I drove a car with OBD it was nice could keep an eye on about every system if I was bored. It was also nice to have instant access to the check engine codes.

Nice job.
Never figured out how you shift the gears with the left hand.

I guess it becomes natural as is driving on the other side of the road.
I would have a drink and forget and .... smack.

I did several trips in one year going between Houston, the UK and Australia where I would spend 1-2 months before moving on. I had no problem adjusting to right hand driving even when I rented a car with a clutch and shift lever, I just reminded myself each morning I drove out as to which side of the road I should drive on, even when I got back to the USA.

The hardest thing I found was that in the UK and Australia the windshield wiper switch and the turn signal can be on different sides depending if they are European or Asian made vehicles so invariably depending on my rental car I would go to use the turn signal and turn on the windshield wipers. My wife thought it pretty funny and would casually remark, "Oh I guess the windows needed cleaning..." Just as I would get used to the side it was on the next rental was different so I was wiping the windows again.
