using seafoam
i am going to use the seafoam today on my 96 dicovery...from what i understand,you use a hose off the intake manifold..which one would be best? also i figure you do this at an idle....when i used it on my outboard motor for my boat,i would spray it in the carb till it choked out the motor,let it sit for 30 minutes,an restart the motor a let

Use the hose going into the throttle body from the LH PCV. I took the hoe off the TB and used a longer piece of hose. That way I know there is no residue to eat the hoses...Slowly suck it into the intake until can is almost empty, then choke it or shut off the engine. Let it sit 20 to 30 mins and drive the smoke out of it.
I talked to someone about this... and they told me never to bother with it on a high mileage land rover... He was telling me it could damage the seals or increase the amount of leaking that already happens with d1's...

did the sea foam from the lt side pvc....running at an idle, let most of the can get sucked in...turned motor off...went to start it 30 minutes later,motor hydrauliced when tryed to start...pulled the plugs,cranked over, some of the cylinders were very full....did a compression check to check for bent valves...compression good in all cylinders...waiting for some new plugs to arrive before i try an start it again....hope i didnt bend a rod....anyway i am not sure what i did wrong.....any ideas?

The can does say to only let it sit for 5 min before restarting though. Maybe it all ran into one cyclinder?

ok, no way to hydraulic lock the motor and mess up a rod. You have a 3.9 liter engine. Take the by 8 cylinders, you have .4875 per cylinder one pint of seafoam =.473 176 liter. What size can did you use? You can fill up one cylinder completely and still have room for compression. Granted, it will be high as heck, but you shouldn't have busted anything....

Engine displacement is measured with the piston(s)at BDC not TDC. At TDC there would be approximately 9x (or whatever the compression ratio is)less room in the cylinder than the .4875 liters you mention, or about 54cc. It is possible to hydraulic lock the engine but I agree that it's highly unlikely in this case.
