Default valve clap/tap

Hey guys :

The weather has been cold up here in Candada forthe past 3 weeks. between -4 and -10 My disco started making clapping/tapping soundz on startup . i did an oil change and switched to 5w 30 the sound is still there on startup. but it goes away as soon as the engine warms up. is this a valve clp/tap and should I be concerned?

I assume that you are using a synthetic 5W30. In cold weather synthetic flows much better than Dino oil.

Good evening,
Have a couple of questions?
1. What is your oil pressure like?
2. How many mile on the Disco
You might need to do the ATF treatment to the motor......Just a thought.

Dont worry about it.
DII's are known for this, apparently the rocker arms are aluminum with steel liners in the cup that the lifter goes into and these liners wear/come loose and rattle.
The good news is it will get worse and do it all the time, the bad news is it will do this for the rest of its life.
If you switch to full syn you can prolong the onset of a full blown lifter noise when your truck is running.

The tapping noise comes from your lifters, rockers , tappets, etc. After it warms up the noise goes away because the lifters are able to receive oil pressure to build up the gap. Thinner oil flows better in engines that have sludge issues. RoverTCV8 has a point with the ATF treatment, as ATF is a detergent and it helps clear up sludge.
