various oil questions
decided to check the diff and trans oil levels/conditions today.
The rear was a pale brown/tan color, when i removed the plug some oil came out, how is it possible to overfill the diff?...i assume the correct oil level is up to the level of the fill plug?
The front was in much better condition, though i will change it anyway, but also seemed overfull...normal?
Didn't have the correct size allen wrench for the transmission fill plug, anyone know what size i need to go and buy?
Which type of oil do i need for the diffs and the trans
Does the transfer case have a fill/drain plug?....didn't see one
Thanks

if you look at the posts at the top of the 1st page under "write up and how to"
there are some great article of changing fluids and what tools are needed. And in the same section is a great atricle from Disco Mike titled "major service" which list fliuds and types.

Pale brown/tan color gear oil might indicate water in the oil, especially of it seems overfull. Not uncommon if you do water crossings. Check that the breather tubes are secure.
I think the tranny takes an 8mm, but I can't remember for sure. It's metric anyway.
I used Valvoline Max Life dex atf, it has not blown up on me yet.
You can use 80w140 gear oil for the transfer case and diffs.
There are 2 plugs on the transfer case, drain plug underneath and fill plug at the rear hidden behind the e-brake drum and cable.

From factory it comes with 75W/90 synthetic gear oil. But you can use 80W/90 or 85W/140 for HD use. I use 75W/140 HD Redline Synthetic. Unless you are a serious off-roader or pull trailers all the time, the factory weight will work just fine. Just change when required.
75w90 is standard, or go with 80w90 or 85w140 or whatever, it's not going to make a helluva difference. The transfer case will be quieter with the thicker stuff.
