Default Vehicle Roll Threshhold

Hello friends!

Does anyone know (or have any youtube videos displaying) the amount a Land Rover can tip to the side and still not roll?

I (at least felt like) I almost tipped my Jeep Cherokee over onto it's side once after I GROSSLY underestimated the steepness of ditch when I was turning around on a narrow road.

I really felt like it should have tipped, but it didn't.. and I think I have exaggerated fears as to how much of an angle these vehicles can tolerate.

Thanks friends,

Pat

All Land Rovers can handle a 40% grade with no trouble. They say 42% is the max before roll over.
Here is what you need to do. Come to Grand Rapids and go to the LR dealer and have them take you over the off road course.
The course has a 38% grade, all you see is ground from the pass seat. Its really cool.
It is on 28th St in Kentwood, Sharpe LR, Jag and BMW.

Man I bet those guys were drunk given the amount of laughing going on. Or they just don't care cause that's a total beater Disco. It depends on how the truck is loaded with cargo,or passengers. Is there anything on the roof like an extra spare tire or Jerry cans full of fuel or water? If the cargo isn't secured it can slide down and cause a weight transfer. The terrain also plays into the angle too like you mentioned. If you run into a small hole on the downside of the hill, or a root sticking out on the upside, you increase the chance of a roll over. Even the ground conditions will impact the angle you can take. If you feel a tip over is going to happen point the wheels down the slope and lightly touch on the throttle to try and get control back.

Very good advice. Someday I'm going to find some 'off roading bootcamp' to put myself through.

Spike- I just might do that! I'm actually going to GR tomorrow at 9am (Wyoming) to test drive a 2000 D2. I'm not thinking about buying it, but it's very similar to one that I'm considering that's much further away.

Thanks for the info!

Pat

Roll over angle will vary with tires, air pressure, warn or new suspension, how much lift you have and the size of your Ba's.
42 degrees is way off the chart, stock or otherwise.

Thanks for weighing in, Mike. Now let me ask you guys this- I saw a youtube video of a Defender rolling onto its side, then being winched upright, and after some guys looked under the hood for a second, taking off again.

I know there's a lot that can happen when an engine is turned upside down and to the side, but is it always a sure-rebuild?

QUICK story, and this is unbelievable: Last winter, my sister in law rolled her Oldsmobile Cutlas convertible (had a roll bar, luckily. Anyway, she rolled it way down into the bottom of a deep ditch on a busy road, and in the process lost her phone. It landed upside down.

Okay... so she eventually crawls out unharmed (small girl... I think she was 19 or 20 at the time... 5'6", maybe 110lbs), climbs up the road and flags someone down. They call my father-in-law, who was at their house about 15 minutes away. He jumps in his truck and flies over there, and (this is the CRAZY part) when he got there, the car was STILL running, STILL in 'drive'. He said the drive wheel was still cranking, and the engine was running. He said he probably spent 5 minutes in the cab of his truck with Kristina making sure she was okay before sliding down the hill to check out the car.

It was STILL running... This is like 25 minutes after being turned upside down.

He said it WAS sputtering pretty bad, but he reached up in there and shut it off. He had a wrecker tow it to their house where he banged it back into shape. Eventually, they replaced the windshield, bought a new top, and the car was fine... no engine problems at all.

Isn't that outrageous?? Or maybe it's not... I just assume it is.

That is crazy that the car was still running after 25 min with all the oil in the upper part of the engine. It should have seized. More so than that the computer should have shut it down once it realize it had rolled over.
I do not know if that is a testamite or a bad thing that it was still running after 25 min upside down.
After rolling a truck over all you need to do is make sure that there is no gas leak and then fire it right back up. It might smoke for a min or two butit wont hurt anything.
Where in Wyoming is that truck? Are you bringing your wife? Want to go to the dealer? I'll meet you and we can go. Help you look the truck over to if you want.
Just let me know, I'm always looking for a excuse to leave the house.

Yep, my wife's going with me. It's this Disco:

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...reset_crumbs=y

The dealer's address is:

2654 28th Street SW
Grand Rapids, MI 49509

The guy said it's been there for almost 3 weeks, and only 2 people have looked at it. He said he'd make me a 'steal of a deal', but I already know I won't be buying it. I think he'd take $6,500.

I feel a LITTLE bad because I think he thinks I'm more interested than I am, but I'll probably just end up telling him that b'ecause of the mileage, I'm going to have to think about it and get back with him'...

If I were more serious about it, I would be VERY grateful to take you up on your generous offer, but since I'm just kind if driving it for a half hour (I told him I'd put $20 in gas in it), I don't think it would be that necessary for you to come out. Besides, we're meeting him there at 9am. But seriously, THANK YOU for the offer... that really means a lot to me.

PS- Kristy ended up selling that Oldsmobile (I think it was a 1994, so I'm not sure how sophisticated the computer was), because it seems like it did end up having a problem with stalling out at the beginning of this summer. She ended up getting a Sebring coupe... pretty nice car.

Do not feel like you are wasting the guys time. That dealership is like 5 mins from my house. I wouldnt buy anything from them, but thats just me.
Are you sure you dont want me to go to the LR dealer with you? I LOVE going over that track.
If you bring I-196 to the Grandville exit and then go back East Good GMC will be on the right after the first stop light. Borgman Ford and then the Belle Tire and then Good GMC.
The LR dealer is across town, keep going East and it is about .5 miles East of Eastern Ave.
You MUST go across the off road course, this is a MUST. Did I mention that that is a MUST?
Meet you there at 10:30? Yes? Love to meet you and your wife and go across the course with you.
Ok, ok, feel free to say no.
