don't pilots have IFS and independent rear? I'm guessing the trail you guys were on didn't have rocks bigger than a golf ball or the pilots would of broke.

Indie suspension front and rear is way better than our solid axles, my Montero had indie all the way around and the wheel travel was just unreal.
You almost always had 4 wheels on the ground at all times.
The only draw back to that truck was that it was not built like a tank like our Discos are but I would stack it up against a Disco anyday.

independent suspension has better wheel travel but is no where close to the strength of solid axles. The only IFS comes close is that IFS the russians came out with for military vehicles, and thats just because it's huge. IFS can not hold up on moderate to difficult rock climbs for very long.

While I agree it might be nice if all LR's held up like a Honda, I have to say that then a Disco's used value would stay as high as a kite and I for one would never have been able to afford the used 97 D1 I bought 5 years ago. Probably a lot less of us would have been able to afford what we have. That being said my D1 has held up at least as well as my wife's 02 Civic has.

The problem with IFS is that your differential doesn't move. So if you hit a bump that force both wheels up your differential comes closer to the ground. At least with solid axles when I put a tire up on a rock I know I'm going to put more distance between my differential and the ground. Plus IFS is weak. Both my vehicles have solid axles at both ends and I like it that way.

It all depends on how the suspension is set up.
On the Montero the diffs, both front and rear were up inside the frame out of harms way.
That truck had 9.5" of ground clearance with the diffs being the lowest point and they had skid plats on them from the factory as well as cooling fins.
That truck was a very formidable off roader, it is used by many militaries as a combat vehicle, of course they get a diesel...
I love Land Rover because of its heritage and what they are capable of, but I would buy another Montero in a heartbeat.
My DI gets a 10 out of 10.
My Montero gets a 9.5 out of 10.

Look under a Montero if you see one on the road, NOTHING hangs down to get whacked with anything.
