Very odd noise when turning wheels to full turn.....
I have a 01 Disco II and I have owned it for 6 months now. It has 122k on it. Ever since I purchased this Disco, when I turn the wheel towards full turn, there comes an odd sound. The wheels keep turning, but makes an almost electrical popping sound. I also had it in Moab, UT this past weekend on some of the trails, and this sound occurred when I was crawling up some terrain and the wheel had some resistance against it, and was only at like half-turn.
Any ideas? Is this normal? Power steering fluid is full, but I did notice that when engine is on, the fluid is almost bubbling, as I can see sloshing going on in the reserve tank.

Thanks for the quick replies! It happens when the vehicle is moving (either forward or in reverse) and it does not appear to matter what speed.
I have not changed the power steering fluid....could that be why it appears to be bubbling?

Thanks for the info on the churning effect I am seeing......Any ideas on where to start with the abs engaging? Why would abs engage when I turn full range on dry roads?

A bad sensor could cause symptoms like your describing but as to why its doing this maybe it has to do with the off roading maybe it is just that time. Its hard to say why or exactly what is wrong but if a sensor us failing it would not care what the road conditions are. I guess you would have stated if you have any abs codes or other lights on?
No what is also going on in my head is the possibility of a wheel bearing could be bad and only having symptoms when its being stressed, turning, climbing, ect... its not a horrible description of a sound or noise but hard for any of us to pin point exact cause not hearing it ourselves.

Before you do any more wheeling, you might want to consider doing m major service list, posted at the top of this section, part of which requires flushing the p/s fluid.
