Fuel filler vent valve.
I suspect this is the culprit, though I didn’t find any fault with it. The vent lines seem to be clear. I think the following are my options:
a) this isn’t my issue at all
b) it will work fine after it’s been reinstalled
c) remove the vent valve permanently
d) order a new vent valve
Any thoughts?

The culprit
I think I figured it out. There is another plunger in the part of the valve that’s directly in the filler assembly. When you go to refuel, the metal flap that opens by inserting the fuel hose is supposed to push this newly found plunger, opening the vent valve. Mine is sticky in the closed position. I’m trying to sand it so it works better, but the metal flap is slightly bent, so it might not work flawlessly anyway.
I’m still wondering about leaving this vent valve out. It seems from reading Rave that it’s an NAS only thing, though I might be reading it wrong.

Rereading it, non NAS do have a vent valve here, but a different style.

Sorry about the seemingly wandering posts, I’m writing this as I try to figure it out. My metal flap is not bent, it has a stand-off as part of it that keeps it from closing completely, leading me to think it was bent. My plunger now moves very freely, but it can travel too far into the filler and the metal flap cannot contact it. I suspect there was something that prevented it from receding too far, but after 20 years I find no trace of it. I’m going to try to put an o-ring on the plunger to prevent it from going in so far. I’ll let you know how it goes.

R03 o-ring added

Plunger with o-ring reinstalled
It seems to work properly now. I hope this helps someone in the future.

Default Slow to fill

I was just wondering if we are talking about the same problem I have....

I am somewhat new to the LR world, had the D2 about a year and it is ridiculously slow to fill with fuel. I have to hold the filler nozzle at it lowest possible setting in order to fill without it kicking off.
I have attempted to clear all lines in that area with pressurized air as well as a snake tool. I never saw anything come out and the problem still exists.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks

Does this happen consistently at all pumps and all stations? I have found that specific pumps will cause my truck to overflow out of the tank when filling unless I go really slowly, but others are perfectly fine at full pump. I remember reading that others had similar experiences sometimes too.

That’s exactly what mine was like. I can’t say it’s your problem for sure though. To get at it you need to remove the filler assembly. RAVE says tank must be below half full to remove it.

Fun fact: The very 1st problem long ago that I had under warranty, in 2004, with literally 5000 miles on a new 2003 D2 (Vienna Green 4.6) was ... this. I could not get gas in the D2 and it took forever to fill up the tank, if I stuck with it.

So the LR Nashville dealer failed to fix it a few times, after futzing around with replacing small hoses/seals or valves or whatever blowing whatever out with compressed air ... Finally they replaced the entire neck assembly between the rear quarter panel and fuel tank, and it was fixed.

That points to the same issue that I had. And also in my case it didn’t matter which gas station I went to.
