Just changed my oil yesterday and noticed a quarter sized coolant spot on the ground. There was a small puddle on the plastic shield by the oil filter. The oil looked normal with no discoloration. The only spot I see coolant is by the water pump about 3 o'clock position looking at the front of the engine.(see pic) The fan does not feel loose or wobbly. The fan turns by hand when cold but only will go a fraction of a turn. when warmed up the fan spins more freely but not more than one turn. The over flow is about 1" below the full line. The temps run about 221 at idle and 199 on the highway with no heat. About 210 and 197 with high heat on. It is 30 degrees today. I did hear tricking of water sound at start up and went away as it warmed up. Any suggestions or recommendations are greatly appreciated. I am hoping this is just a bad water pump and or fan.

It could be a waterpump, seals and bearings don't always go with mileage, they go with age and dryness.

 

does not mean it is the water pump but it does look to be the front cover gasket. What you might want to do is go and do a pressure test to see if you can get a better idea before you start pulling things apart. If it is the front cover gasket I would go ahead and replace the water pump at the same time, as well as flushing your coolant system and switching over to the 180 degree thermostat. all in all your looking at about $250.00 in parts and fluids and half a day. But then you will have a very healthy system.

 

When replacing the water pump might consider buying a AirTex water pump from British Parts of Utah or A. B. Around $150 and comes with a heavy bronze empellor and a 2 year warranty

 

DMike- you didn't respond in the other CDL thread, but have you run TC and CDL at the same time?

 

The seals and gaskets will dry out and rot/leak with lack of use, its called "lot rot", happens to cars that sit on dealers lots for months and months at a time.

 

Seconded. Also OP your temperatures are running a little high for standard operating temperature. Most of us like to be in the 190-200 range as this is a good safe range against an overheat. The 180 motorad t-stat will help bring your temperatures down and if you don't have an ultragauge consider getting one as well.

yes sir that is the one get her ordered.. regardless of the leak as mentioned by 007 your temps are high.. especially for it being winter. But please figure out that leak before it becomes worse and you over heat your truck.

 

If it appears to be wet from water, you have a leak somewhere, possibly in your water pump or the gasket. If you notice green liquid on the cardboard, it's antifreeze. This means you definitely have a coolant leak somewhere.
